cherokee and commanche were both available with a 2.1 liter turbo diesel made by renault if your 1991 has a manual trans one of these can be bolted in with only a bell housing/ motor mount and radiator change [plus wiring and fuel system mods] the automatic trans for this engine was a special built chrysler similer to the 904 series but with a modified bell housing and a stronger convertor and fnt pump.
this engine was also used by winnabago in the Le Sharo line of motor homes so finding one that still runs shouldnt be too hard but it would be best to purchase a wrecked or blown engine jeep to have all the parts to make it work in your body
these were pretty good engines as long as you kept the timing belt services up to date

Here you go. http://www.dieselpowermag.com/features/t...
Bare in mind the Cummins is an industrial engine and will out last your Cherokee.. Ha Ha. Seriously it was designed for construction machinery at 80% load factors. With this installation you MIGHT see 15% load going down the road.
Good Luck,,,send pictures!!!
Note the 4BT at 4.8;liter is for the this conversion. The new 3.3 is the replacement.
PS As for the comment " Never been a Diesel Engine for a jeep" WRONG gas breath..been available in Europe for over 10 years, but not the cummins and is in production for the Liberty now and the Grand almost immediately.

The answer that you're looking for is probably...

Yes, you can replace your engine but the work it will take will probably be more than what you may want to do.

Some things to consider...

Engine mounts, will the engine mount up to tranny, fuel connections, radiator relocation if needed and etc..

only if you learn how to spell diesel correctly!

I am sure it can be done if the engine fits in the bay, however it will probably cost more than it is worth.

if you are very mechanically inclined yes but you'll probably have to replace the tranny and their will be some rewiring required. it will be quite a major project.
