I'm always hearing about the benefits of live bacteria cultures in yogurt. I would like to start eating yogurt consistantly to see if it help my digestive system at all, except I hate yogurt! Are there any other foods out there that offer the same benefits?

to be honest with u.. many teachers in medical school tell us about this yoghurt drinks .. and basically they do nothing !

ur body (or colon) is filled with millions of commensal healthy bacteria, they live their quite happily and do their job just fine !!

the point of the yoghurt drinks is to make you have more bacteria .. however once any organism reach the stomach it is immediatly killed by the PH of the stomach unless it is present in some sort of alkaline PH (in this case the yoghurt) !! so the whole thing is based on the yoghurt keeping the bacteria alive .. i dont think u can introduce the same concept using any other mechanism so am afraid it has to be youghurt !! but then again .. there is no need for these bacteria as i mentioned unless u have severe diarrhoea for a week or so and u can introduce some bacteria to help in digestion .. however in 2-3 days ur bacteria will be back in normal without the help of any of these yoghurt drinks !!

reading the answers above - i would like to add:
acidophils are bacteria which will survive the acidic PH of the stomach (didnt know they use these) so yea, u can get them in drinks or food other than yoghurt .. ask for these pills everyone is mentioning !!

Most of what I know about this stuff is nothing. However, I've seen the DanActive commercials and I think that they are clearly for gullible people who cannot think for themselves or read between the lines. In two of the commercials, the women talk about how they're irregular and bloated and make references to the food they eat (junky take out food) and how they've been not taking care of themselves. Gee. Ya think poor nutrition, self care and lack of sleep might be a factor? In another one, the father says that stress might be a factor and turns off the radio playing rock music. He eliminated a possible stressor.

On the other hand, I do not eat dairy at all. Yet, I'm regular from plenty of whole grains and veggies. I'm not woking, and I have a pretty low stress life. I get at least seven hours a sleep a night; Usually about eight. I'm 22 weeks pregnant and am not overly concerned about my baby's health. Yeah, I'm pretty "regular" too.

There might be some benefits to it, but I'm not going to rush out and get anything.

Just try the pills at the health food store that contain beneficial bacteria found in yogurt. The bacterias are called acidophilis, or bifidophilus. Try to get the pill in an delayed release form.

Most health food stores and almost all the vitamin stores carry acidopholis (spelling??) tablets. They have the same live bacteria cultures that yogurt has. You can even buy acidopholis milk in the store, instead of plain milk.
