Take with you a six-string acoustic guitar that requires no amplification and a strong arm to carry an amplifier. Years from now you can invest in a fine electric guitar, but for now concentrate on the basics of good guitar playing through an acoustic instrument.

Not sure what you mean.. if you mean thinner and thicker on the same guitar.. the thinner strings are the higher notes. If you mean thinner or thicker between sets of strings... then then thicker strings will give you a softer sound good for finger plucking, thinner will give you a sharper more crisp sound.

Probably a regular acoustic 6 string. You can start there and move on to electric.
