Wow that's amazing, how nice to know there are people like that in the world! I wouldn't know where to start expressing my gratitude either!!
I'd definitely get flowers for them, a BIG bunch. I'd also want to give them something they could keep so they'd never forget my gratitude - at least a card with your thoughts written in it. Perhaps a little token of something with 'special people' written on it, or maybe just 'thankyou'. Someone I helped at work (vet nursing) made me a key ring with a picture of his dog on one side and 'thankyou for all your help' on the other. Not quite the same situation of course, but I can tell you I was very touched, and now I'll always have something to remind me of how I helped someone!
Just beware of making huge gestures, they can make people uncomfortable (I would actually be uncomfortable with people who wouldn't let me pay the vet bill). I think something small but long-lasting would be most appropriate, maybe a little engraved dog ornament or something.

This is called a Karma Debt. It cannot be repaid. It can only be passed on.
If you are ever in the position to help someone in great need - then do so. That might be in the form of helping a family get back on its feet after losing their home in a fire, or fostering dogs from the shelter. It could be helping someone get a job, or making sure your elderly neighbor's sidewalk is shoveled. Or, as someone else mentioned - help with the vet bill for someone else - especially if they can't afford it.
Now then, as to your real question: Again, no amount of money can ever repay this couple's kindness. Hire a photographer to take a really good happy photo of you, your family and dog together and have a full 8 X 10 copy matted and framed professionally. Then, write a nice thank you note for reuniting your family. Finally, make a generous (as your budget can afford - but at least $100) donation to the shelter in your area in their name.
No, you don't have to gush, fawn or fall over backwards - that's not what the couple wants - but they probably would appreciate a brief hand-written note or two during the year (in addition to a Christmas card) just to touch base and let them know how you-all are doing and remind them how their act of kindness changed your lives forever to the good.
The world needs more angels like these folks - and like you, too.

Sandicast make some really awesome dog figurines. If you can find one that looks somewhat like you dog it would make a great gift.
I have given this gift myself to someone who helped me out when I was trying to catch an injured puppy for several hours in the bitter cold. He really loved it. The puppy did not belong to either of us and we had never met before, but we did find a great friendship and we also managed to catch the pup in the end and save his life.
I think these people would really like something like I suggested as they are obviously dog lovers.
Another thought maybe to make a donation to an animal shelter in their names.
One last thing... pay a vet bill for someone else at your vets for someone who can;t afford it. They saved your dogs life. Maybe you could save anothers?
May God bless these dear people always.

WOW! That's WONDERFUL! I would get them a gift basket filled with goodies. Maybe a fruit basket or gourmet food basket? If you have any idea what their food preferences are, pick up take out from a really nice local restaurant. One time I did this and created my own basket with silverware, place mats and napkin holders. I brought all of it over with the hot food I had ordered. Of course it cost me a pretty penny but the people I gave it too loved it! It's just SO NICE to hear a story like this! It sure gives me hope!

How very kind of them! I'll bet you can't begin to say how grateful you are.
It's sweet of you to want to get them something. How about a gift certificate to a popular resturant? Or maybe a bed and breakfast place? Get a cute thank you card and sign it with the dog's name.

I am usually the one in my neighborhood who somehow finds all the lost dogs in the town. The best present I ever received was fresh flowers and a thank you card from the owners-all by surprise one day a few weeks after I found their dog and called them. I really appreciated their gesture, having not expected anything.

What a wonderful thing for them to do. I'd send a nice gift card and a note promising that you will "pay it forward." If it were me, I'd like to know that my good deed inspired you to pass it on to someone else in the future.
