I have sprayed her with medicine to prevent any itching. She has slowed down, but is still doing it. She started about 4 months and I cannot think of anything that would have upset her.

As with most symptoms, there are many possible causes so you need to go to a vet to alleviate your cat's discomfort.

What flea treatment are you using? If it's not from a vets you can probably assume it's not being effective. What is this spray you're using to prevent itching? How can you prevent itching if you don't know the cause of the itch?

It could be something as simple a foreign object in her tail oe some other injury causing her irritation, or she could've developed allergies, or it could be hormonal (yes, even in a spayed cat) or an infection or other things!

Take her to a vet, four months is a long time to go with an irritating tail.

My friends cat gets like that every three months or so. She has to bring him to the vet to get a shot and then he is better. The vet thinks it is some type of allergy to something in the house. His skin just gets all dry and itchy and he pulls his hair out of his tail and the top of his butt. Bring her to the vet, imagine how uncomfortable she is the poor thing.

It could be any number of things, from a tail injury, to allergies, to self-mutilation in response to stress. Take her to the vet for a thorough checkup.

Take her to the vet and have her tested for food allergies. This is exactly what my parent's cat started doing, when she developed these allergies. They put her on a special diet and it cleared up.

Sounds like she is allergic to something or may have a possible abscess forming under the skin. Check for any lumps. If it's an abscess, the vet can treat that by draining it and giving her medication. Same for allergies. Please have her seen by the vet.
