I believe folic acid is a Vitamin B ~ im not positive ~ Folic acid should be taken by someone thinking about getting pregnant I think . I probably shouldnt have answered this as I am unsure ~ but I take folic acid while taking oral chemotherapy for arthritis. I must neutralize the stomach as some of the meds can bother the inner lining of the stomach. I have had no problems what so ever.

The risk of neural tube defects birth
defects of the brain (anencephaly) and spinal cord
(spina bifida) is
significantly reduced when women get enough of the vitamin, folic acid
before they become pregnant. Folic acid may also help prevent certain types of cancer.
· The brain and spinal cord are formed during the first month of pregnancy before
most women know they are pregnant. That's why it's important for women to
get adequate folic acid throughout their childbearing years, even when not
planning a pregnancy. Then, if a woman gets pregnant, her risk of having a baby
with a serious defect of the brain or spinal cord is reduced.
· Women need to continue taking folic acid during pregnancy in their prenatal
vitamins.
· Men and postmenopausal
women also need folic acid every day to reduce
their risk of heart disease, stroke, and cervical or colon cancer.

It helps with the binding of vitamin B12 and its absorption. Lack of folic acid can lead to poor growth, graying hair, GI lesions and diarrhea. It can also cause anemia.
