The most honest, kind thing you say is the truth. "Thank you" and "I am touched that you feel that way" are truths. If you feel that you need to tell him that you don't feel the same, then say it. It is so much better to know the truth than to guess or to feel like a fool for sharing how you feel and facing silence. We play emotional games with each other...hurt each other...and lie to one another way too much. Just open your heart and tell the truth and let the relationship find its way from there.

i tried the "thank you" line before, and that left an awkward feeling in the air. but you have to say something or it's just even more awkward. something like a smile and "oh, you are so wonderful" might deflect from the fact that you didn't reciprocate the strong feelings. then change the subject quickly! :)

You can smile, and thank them for sharing those emotions, but you also owe it to them to share y ours. "I don't feel for you in the same way, though I have a close bond.." or some such thing....
You need to open up and at least let them know the truth.

Maybe something like, "aren't you sweet!"
Or just a playful slap on the arm and a lighthearted, "oh, YOU!" They'll get that you think they are kidding and probably won't say it again -- but it will minimize hurt feelings.

No you don't say thank you. It's not like when some one says you look nice. You could (given that you're in a relationship with this person) tell them that you aren't ready to say it back yet. And if it makes you uncomfortable, then tell them to please respect you and not say it until you're ready.

Laugh nervously and move backwards slowly towards the door. J/K!
Dont be shy. Talk about it! Tell him that unfortunately you dont feel the same...maybe in time you will but you dont at the moment.

I think that a "Thank You" would be sufficient. :) I think it would be more rude to not say anything at all.
