Garmins are popular but over priced...
I would advise you to go to Fry's, Best buy or something and tinker around with them a lil bit to see which interface you're comfortable with....
Mio's a new player in the market and they make more affordable devices...
Tom tom and Magellan a relatively well known brands too....
But in my experience, we rarely got garmins back, tom toms and magellans were a different story,
can't comment on mio since they were a relatively new brand while i was working.
Personally, I don't like tom tom and magelan's interface.
The mio interface is fine, but garmin's are by far the easiest to use....
But for the price I'd go with Mio.
you can get a portable Mio for around 200$ way cheaper than the entry level Garmin products, and their portable ones start at $350 [i'm talking about the garmin 350 here so don't start with me about the 320 etc...]
But at just 150 extra the garmin 350 is not a bad choice, considering it used to cost upward of 500 or 600$ when in dec last year...
It all depends on your budget, if you want something cheap that works acceptably well, go for the Mio, if you don't mind shelling out a lil more Mulah, go for the Garmins

That depends entirely on what you plan to use it for.
In my opinion, Garmin is by far the best all-around. However, for open water navigation, Magellan has the edge.
Plan on using it just for driving? Get a fixed unit that can be wired directly to your car. GPS receivers love batteries so hard-wiring it to your car can be more cost-effective and the units are designed specifically for road mapping and do that one thing very well.
Plan to use it to find where you parked your car at the mega-mall? Want to find that fishing hot spot in the middle of the lake? Want to have fun with it, like with geocaching? You'll want a handheld.
My suggestion would be to look at the Garmin eTrex series and get the best one your budget will allow for.

A friend of mine works at Bose, which in addition to working creating speakers and radios has some incar products. As a result she's looked at LOTS of nav systems from different manufacturers. Her strong recommendation was for the TomTom portable navigator. She felt it was heads and sholders above the rest.
Here a link to the CNET review.

Garmin is spending more marketing their products in the US, at least here in the US, but from what I've read TomTom products are far superior.

Choose a Sprint power phone. You can use Garmn Mobile or a service called "Tele-Nav" on a cafeteria basis. Pay per use, for the week, or on a monthly basis.
That way you don't have to pay $500 for a unit PLUS a monthly subscripton for the navigation.
