I'm sure I'll miss some things, but I'll try to do my best.
You need to decide if you want:
An indoor or outdoor wedding and choose & book your venue.
Civil or religious ceremony and book an officiant.
A theme for your wedding/reception?
Bridesmaids. If so how many? Ask them. Have your fiance do the same with Groomsmen.
Pick your colors so you can start looking for dresses and look for your own dress & accessories. (Jewelry, veil, tiara, shoes, purse, underthings, garter)
What kind of favors will you want? They should reflect your theme if you have one as well as your colors.
Book a baker for the cake. If you want, think about what you'd like in a Groom's cake.
What kind of flowers do you want? Find a florist and sign a contract. Don't forget table centerpieces.
What kind of food do you want to serve? Book a caterer or chef. Find out if they provide tablecloths, cups, plates, napkins, cutlery, etc. If not, pick them up yourself.
Book a photographer and if you wish, a videographer.
Find a DJ or band or make other arrangements for music.
Choose, order and send out invitations. (Make sure you consult with the future in-laws on the list)
Purchase your & your fiance's wedding bands and have them engraved if you wish.
Get your marriage license.
Register for gifts.
Make arrangements for the honeymoon.
You'll need to make a seating arrangement once the rsvp's are received.
Decide how you want your hair and nails done for the big day and do a trial run.
Make sure you have an emergency kit for the big day like first aid items, sewing thread & needle, touch-up nail polish, extra pair of hose, etc.
There's a lot in this list, but I know I've missed a lot too. Don't be afraid to consult WeddingChannel.com or Brides.com. Ask your mother, siblings, co-workers, friends, for details you might have missed. Keep lists. I keep mine organized on an Excel spreadsheet. Make sure you solicit help from your Maid of Honor and bridesmaids.

You first pick out your wedding party, who will be maid of honor, best man etc etc. Then monthly meetings with wedding party will help with ideas on planning your wedding. You plan what color and types of dresses the girls and guys will wear. Choose where to buy them or have the dresses made. Then of course you need to form a guest list to know how many will be attending, then you find a place and location the wedding will take place. You need to decide on catering expenses, flowers, decorations, invitations, music. There is so much in planning a wedding it is good you still have time. Best of luck to you I hope I have helped.!

If you don't like theknot.com try the weddingchannel.com. They have a great checklist of EVERYthing you should/can do in preparation for your wedding.
I also recommend the "Weddings for Dummies" books. Very informative and in an easy to read & remember writing style.
Every wedding is different... and what one person "needs" isn't going to be the case for the next. My wedding consists of 14 people on a mountain... I don't need anything else.
Congrats and good luck!

That is a TALL order, and one that really cannot be answered in a place like this. There are plenty of wedding planning sites that offer these types of lists and planning reminders.
Try www.ourweddingday.com for starters.

Buy a wedding magazine like Brides or Bridal Guide. They usually have a list of what you need and what you need to do, with month by month guidelines of what needs done that month. You don't have to follow it to a t, but it will give you a good idea if you are lost.

as far as places to have it, Id start with your city's chamber of commerce website. Brdial magazines will give you ideas for sedding colors and styles. I am surprised that you feel the knot website wasnt helpful, they really do have great ideas there. you can also try Martha Stuarts website, she has an entire section on weddings there.
