These people actually must have quite a boring job. Day in day out same line , anything to declare, blah blah blah.
Keeping a civil state of mind when dealing with such a lot of people must truly be a god send.

I think they're trained to be somewhat cold and to-the-point but not necessarily rude. They are definitely not there to make friends though and one should't expect to have them kid around and be all smiles.

Incidentally, I live in Canada and whenever I travle to the States, I find the customs employees to be professional and sometimes even friendly. I usually have more trouble coming back to Canada. For some reason, Canadian customs employees seem intent on giving you the rudest possible welcom back to your own country.... go figure.

I have met some rude ones but mostly very nice ones. No matter what the job, most people are nice but unfortunately, you will always have those who want to power trip.

No they aren't all rude. I remember dealing with very polite officials at Pearson Airport and very rude ones at Vienna, in stark contrast. I think they have a hard job ro do and I wouldn't want to do it. Can you imagine having to search someone for drugs? Yuk.

When we got back from our cruise Aug '06, my fiance and I were taken care of by a very nice customs agent.

Actually, I've never met a rude customs employee. I have found, if you're polite to them, they'll be nice to you.

They are rude. They don't make an effort to smile to the people they are talking/interviewing to.
