I've noticed much more hateful rhetoric in the R&S category, than any other on YA. I realize it's a forum for discussion, but can't everyone discuss ideas without insulting the people they disagree with?

They can but the problem arising when you try to express your beliefs as you've been asked then someone feels the need to come in and tell you you're going to hell.

Or they insult you with little snide comments about your beliefs being of the devil.

It actually just snowballs.

I like to believe that there is more love in the world than hate, and that there's more love here at R&S than hate. As we go through life, or through R&S, we are drawn to the train wrecks because they are so awful and out of place, and we stare at them instead of sitting in the field of flowers all around us. We are conditioned to be this way by our media; despite the billions of wonderful things that happen in the world each day, it is only the "train wrecks" of tragedy and sorrow that make the evening news.

As I pick and choose my way through the questions and posts here, I usually ignore the mean, the ugly, the juvenile and the trolls (although I must admit that some of the trolls are so fun that I cannot help but respond). I like to think that most of us are good and wonderful people, and despite the juvenile and uncivilized discourse that jams the Qs and postings that the majority of us are kind and loving and, in our own way, hope that all the angry and disenchanted find peace, happiness, joy and all their causes.

Perhaps if more of us bring love and compassion to the forum, R&S will seem more loving and compassionate. But it is easier to smile at the delusions than to engage. And sometimes all that is required to engage is a simple smile.

The user does not only hate me but my fan base and friends too. Personally, I think this shouldn't have happened in the first place. If there is an argument between two users, shouldn't they leave their friends/fans alone? What do they have to do with the argument in the first place? There's also insults being thrown at the peeps of the R&S.

Unlike other categories, R&S is extremely polarised and so there's very little in the way of common ground. This doesn't excuse the hate, but hopefully explains it some.

Largely the atheists retaliate with hate for what is percieved as an affront to their intelligence while believers retaliate with hate for what they percieve as an attack on their god.

Exactly. Let's debate ideas on their on merits and not just insult people. There is a difference between debate and argument.

You wanna see hate? Go to the politics or immigration sections of Y!A. R&S is a hug fest compared to those.

As long as it is sharing of knowledge it remains cordial.Only when some one forces his opinion where it is uncalled for, it turns bitter.

There is much to hate about religion. It has caused more intolerance, violence, and suffering than any other system of belief.
