The four big banks are the ANZ, Commonwealth, NAB and Westpac. There are many smaller banks and credit unions which night serve you better depending on what you want. You can easily move your account from one bank to another so start with one of the big banks and then take a look at the smaller banks when you get to Brisbane.
Of the four big ones, I use the ANZ and have had no problems. The Commonwealth has its supporters and detractors. The NAB recently charged a friend $70 for depositing $30,000. He hit the roof and changed his account to the ANZ. I don't know about Westpac, I have had no dealngs with them.

If you want a full service bank, you may want to go for one of the big ones like Westpac or Commonwealth. ANZ has the best customer service though. If you've looking for a home loan though, you can usually get a better rate from the non-banks separately.

Commonwealth. They have both savings (like checking in America) and high interest accounts for savings.
