To some degree, yes. It is more intense (higher wattage bulbs) so it will keep your results longer and you tan for less time. However, they usually have a different formula of UVA/UVB than the regular 20 minute beds...usually more UVA.

Quick run down on how tanning works:
UVB stimilates your skin to produce melanin...a required step in getting darker. UVA oxidizes the melanin, and turns in brown. You need both UVA and UVB to get a deep, dark tan. Also, it is a good idea to hop into a high UVB bed if you plan to be outside for an extended period of time. It will "prepare" your skin so that you have less risk of getting burned or causing any damage to your skin, and will decrease your risk for getting skin cancer.

Contrary to what some people may believe, tanning indoors does not automatically give you skin cancer. It is much, much more healthy than exposing your skin to the sun outdoors. Unfortunately, the American Association of Dermatology (AAD) has made quite a profit in offering a VERY stretched truch on tanning indoors, and base their statements very loosely on unsopported information. Very hypocritical, considering that a lot of dermatologists & other doctors do and have "perscribed" sun lamp exposure to cure many skin ailments and to help alleviate depression. However, they lose out on valuable $$$ once people realize that they can pay roughly $20/month to get the same treatment in a tanning salon, opposed to the $100+/session that they doctors charge for their "special treatment".

There is some great info on www.tanningtruth.com that may help you in your indoor tanning endevours.

Basically, you should tan indoors - in the right beds for your skin type and what you are trying to achieve - for a few days in a row to build your desired base tan. Once you have your base, you sould only tan a few times a week to keep it. And always mix your beds up if you can. Most people who think they got skin cancer from indoor tanning either already had the skin damage and just made it worse with more UV exposure, or they tan every day or a few times every day, or tan for too long and burn their skin (AKA - skin damage)...which there is absolutely no need for. Just be sure to always wear eye protection since the skin on and around your eyes is SUPER thin!

I personally don't get into a regular 20-minute bed. That is, however, due more to comfort level...I like to have more room in my bed, and the bigger beds are created to not get as hot. I have my base tan already established, so I will tan twice a week in a high-pressure 12 minute bed, and once a week in a stand-up 10 minute bed.

I only need to tan once or twice a week in the high-pressure beds to keep my tan, but I like to get that extra Serotonin boost (which is a natural anti-depressant & sleep regulator that is released during proper UV exposure). And there is absolutely NO WAY for your body to get as much Vitamin D as you can with the UV exposure from a healthy tanning regamine.

I know that is more info than you asked for, but hope it helps.

Honestly I think I get darker in the 20 min bed then the other one, which is also bigger. Rotate every other time.
