When I was in the active Army and going through basic training, I was going into a MOS that most "real Soldiers" thought was pud...At the same time, I had never fired a rifle before in my life, and learned every step in basic rifle marksmanship by the numbers as taught by the drill sergeant. We had a whole bunch of stupid hicks who had "been huntin' all my life" in my company as well.
Guess who was a first time "Expert" on the range? Yours truly.
Guess who had a BUNCH of bolos all thorugh basic rifle marksmanship? A lot of the "huntin' all my life" crowd.
The point being, the Army will teach you EVERYTHING you need to know about firing a rifle. If you think you know something now, best to unlearn it.

Im a military firearms instructor...never been to sniper school...but have attended schools with the sniper school cadre
If you join and can shoot a gun, great...
If you are thinking about joining and want to learn to shoot before you join...dont even try. No way you can learn enough to make a difference.
To fire well all you have to do is fire consistant, believe me thats easier than it sounds.
The hardest thing about the sniper school, is range estimation. Any instructor can teach a monkey to move the sights up 16 clicks to hit 800M...but its hard to teach someone to estimate the difference between 400M and 800M.
The PT is hard, but if you make it to sniper school...you can already PT well enough.
And dont let it bother you when the cadre calls you sniper baby...
good luck

They have a very extensive training program for it, provided you show some aptitude to actually be one. It takes much more than just being able to shoot, that's the easy part. The hard part is the cover and concealment, moving to shooting positions, laying motionless for hours (in your own filth if you happen to have to go), and other such fun activities.

The military service would prefer that any one entering the service has never fired a gun. In this way, they can teach you their way, without you having developed any bad habits on your own !
