There are two direct relationships that cause world hunger. First, people live in unproductive areas or are not properly working the land so that it yields food to support the population. No outside force can make a people productive if they refuse to participate in feeding themselves.
Second, excess population. In one nation after another we see people breeding indiscriminately. The more food they have, the more they reproduce. I saw this in detail in the Philippines. They have gone from rice exporters to rice importers because they will not stop breeding. A man may never have a job, might not get married, but he will produce at least six babies over his life time with possibly two or more women. I knew a rich man near my home there who had 63 children by 47 women. And he is nowhere near the record holders.
We can do nothing more than find one person, feed and educate him and hope he educates those around him and those who follow.

It's so easy to look at that number and just be overwhelmed. The best thing we can do as individuals is educate others, and lead by our example. As Gandhi said: You must BE the change you wish to see in the world.
You could try volunteering at a soup kitchen, or donating food to one, or a local food bank (ours is always happy to have volunteers help). I lead an annual food drive for our congregation's youth group this past year and was so happy to have collected so much food, we had to make 2 trips to the food bank to deliver it all. Food banks also need food more during certain times of the year (I believe summer might be one), you might think about calling yours to see when supplies typically run short, and arrange for a group to do a food drive during that month. You can set up places for donations to be dropped off outside of local grocery stores, handing out fliers as people go in with specific items or types of food needed most (you have to call and reserve the area and get approval from store managers ahead of time). That's a good way to help locally. If you are looking for a way to make a difference worldwide, Oxfam and IRC are two of my favorite charities that I feel do a lot of good. A fund raising event for either of those would help save lives of people in some of the poorest areas in the world. Here are the links to their sites:

Wishing you and the world peace and blessings. Best of luck in your endeavors my friend.

Start local. Give canned goods to your local food bank. Volunteer a few hours a month.

Population control. Help people learn to limit the size of their families. Make birth control effective, available, and affordable.
Resist efforts by the Catholic church, Bush, and others who are trying to make abstinence the only birth control available. It doesn't work, and it never did.

Stop giving food to foreign countries and to the illegal immigrants in this country and care for our own for a change, donate to your local food bank, and if you are a business owner only hire those who are legally in this country. I don't mean to sound harsh, but I care for all the people legally in this country and I think they should be cared for.

Take half of the current U.S. military budget and buy food with it. It is estimated that this would end world hunger in a day.
