Do you speak before you listen or do you speak without thinking?

I sometimes jump to speak before I listen to the speaker carefully enough, and I'm speaking and thinking simultaneously. But I try to listen to what is being said and to feel and understand that person. It's easy to slip sometimes, but it would help to take a moment!
