Because people make judgements. "Good" and "evil" don't exist. They aren't a type of substance or characteristic of something. They are just judgements by people.

As society has evolved, we have learned how to live amongst each other relatively peaceably. We like living in relative peace without having to worry if the next guy will just kill you. Therefore, we judge things that disrupt society as evil.

Much of that judgement comes from our instincts, and much of it comes from our experiences in life.

What is evil to one person may not be evil to another. Some people see evil in everything. Have you ever thought that maybe we call things evil because we don't like it? A car wreck takes a persons life. Some will say that evil was involved when in fact it was simply misjudgments on other peoples part. Or maybe even a malfunction of the vehicle.

I try and look at things like this. Even if I don't like what happens I try to see what the outcome is. Evil things can sometimes bring about good. It brings attention to it and then changes happen. I'm not saying I like these things that we call evil it's just I try to see something positive.

Because of what mankind has become. Mans Soul is as dark as Midnight anymore and it seems that most are TRYING to put them self ABOVE God by Playing God. They go all around looking for answers that they can find IF they would swallow their Pride and Accept what Christ has done for them. Everything that a person has to know is IN Gods Word. Just because one is a Christian, (a true one) does NOT MEAN that one cannot have a happy life. One does NOT have to Pray 24/7 and watch behind every tree and bush for a Demon to jump out at them. There IS TOO MUCH Spiritual Ignorance and Blindness in this world and they WILL NOT Open their Ears and Eyes Spiritually to the Father. (God)

the answer is so that we can have a full experience while we are here on the earth. We need to know the bad so that we can choose the good.

The book of Mormon offers a good explanation for the reason why there needs to be evil.
2 neph 2:11-15
11 For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my first-born in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility.
12 Wherefore, it must needs have been created for a thing of naught; wherefore there would have been no purpose in the end of its creation. Wherefore, this thing must needs destroy the wisdom of God and his eternal purposes, and also the power, and the mercy, and the justice of God.
13 And if ye shall say there is no law, ye shall also say there is no sin. If ye shall say there is no sin, ye shall also say there is no righteousness. And if there be no righteousness there be no happiness. And if there be no righteousness nor happiness there be no punishment nor misery. And if these things are not there is no God. And if there is no God we are not, neither the earth; for there could have been no creation of things, neither to act nor to be acted upon; wherefore, all things must have vanished away.
14 And now, my sons, I speak unto you these things for your profit and learning; for there is a God, and he hath created all things, both the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are, both things to act and things to be acted upon.
15 And to bring about his eternal purposes in the end of man, after he had created our first parents, and the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and in fine, all things which are created, it must needs be that there was an opposition; even the forbidden fruit in fopposition to the tree of life; the one being sweet and the other bitter.

Someone said (can't remember the author...), "...nothing is right or wrong but that thinking makes it so (or words to that effect)".

You've noticed that different cultures have different concepts of good and evil and dramatically different traditions. Those concepts have evolved with those cultures over many years.

Since there is no "global standard" for all forms of good/evil, every action is open to interpretation.

Evil is live spelled backwards. You might say it's living backwards. "There's a time for everything under the sun". I suspect that evil is just the right thing at the wrong time like being brutally honest with no tact for timing and degree.

Only by the casting of a shadow can we see what is in the light.
I f you didn't have an occasional 'bad day', how could you appreciate the good days?
The real answer to your question is 'balance'.

Such a simplistically complex question, with such a complexly simple answer...

Good and Evil only dwell in the perception(s) of our personal ego(s).

discrimination. judgement. discernment.

Picking & Choosing, at times one doesn't have to, & when it's best not to.

There're some times one has to, though.

Life's a tough balancing act.

I think if one can get beyond 'labelling', one would be very free.

Thank You, Digilook.
