Yes it is true. The paracetamol is to strong for the dog. It stays in their bloodstream up to 3 day (my vet had told me).

Paracetamol is highly toxic to dogs.
Aspirin given no more than 300mg at a time can be very good for pain relief, always consult your vet first though.

Aspirin is not toxic to dogs given in the proper amount. I've never heard of the other drug but Tylenol is toxic to cats and I think dogs. Aspirin is often given to dogs as a pain killer for joint problems. It is lots cheaper than vet prescribed stuff and often safer.

Paracetamol is toxic, aspirin I believe is sometimes prescribed by vets, but I wouldn't give aspirin without veterinary advise.

I don't know Paracetamol but you're not supposed to give straight aspirin to a dog as it's hard on their stomachs.

I was told to give my dog Ecotrin which is a coated form of aspirin.
I also have prescription pain medicines for my dog if I need them.

People who want to give human meds are trying to save the cost of a vet visit or a prescription medication.

Aspirin used to be widely prescribed to dogs, but they found that it can cause problems. Tylenol is banned from animal use. There are so many good doggy drugs out these days that I would just take the vet prescribed stuff. And I have been giving my dogs Deramaxx, Rimadyl, and Metacam for years.

Aspirin is fine, and opften used for artiritis. To reduce stomach irritation, use buffered aspirin or give aspirin at mealtime.

ACETAMINOPHEN which includes "Panadol" and "Paracetamol" and is, of course, the human over-the-counter analgesic medicine used to relieve pain..after the pills are taken, the ingredients are broken down in the body by enzymes in the liver. In people, Panadol and Paracetamol and any other Analgesics are generally a safe and a very useful painkiller.
Dogs (particularly small dogs) are also susceptible to significant tissue damage from as little as two regular strength Panadol or Paracetamol and repeated doses increase the risk significantly. Signs develop quickly and can include salivation, vomiting, weakness and abdominal pain. Due to the significant toxicity to pets in relatively minimal dosages, the recommendation is clear - Panadol, Paracetamol or any Analgesics should not be given to dogs or cats.

Aspirin in small doses is fine for dogs (afterall, aspirin is formulated from salicylic acid, which is derived from willow bark. Other animals, like deer, normally eat the bark anyways and it gives them a mild sedative effect, and early homids used it too, and probably gave it to early dogs as well when they were in pain). However, as modern aspirin is very concentrated in pill form, you should ask your vet about proper dosage. However, aspirin should never be given to cats, for some reason they are allergic to practically everything.

Advil is not safe for dogs, and paracetemol (Panadol) is actually acetaminophen, or tylenol. Tylenol is suitable for dogs in the right doses, but never for cats, and it does nothing for inflammation. Really, the only thing I've ever felt safe giving my dog was aspirin, since it is something with a natural counterpart that I understand (I know how willow bark works on pain and inflammation).

Either aspirin or tylenol are only a short term fix for pet pain though, and should not be given long term (any more than a couple of days). A vet visit is very much recommended.

I know they are toxic for cats, I don't know about dogs, but I suppose it could be toxic for them too.
As for giving painkillers to your pet, it is quite common: I have warned many times here on Yahoo people who wanted to give paracetamol or aspirin to their cat after an operation. Even my vet has sometimes told me to give some human medication to my cat, but he has prescribed specific drugs and specific dosage, and has warned me against paracetamol or aspirin.

Aspirin is deadly to cats, not dogs. We used to give our dog children's aspirin for fever etc. But it goes on the weight of the dog, you can't give them a full adult human dose of course!
In cats, aspirin causes renal and liver failure.
