what it's like to be an atheist, or gay in the American bible belt? I would be petrified to live in certain areas of America, it would be like living in a horror movie. Not all America, just the bible belt...

riette... of course you would be petrified to be an atheist, because it would require you to grow up, make decisions and be logical. But you really should try it, its so liberating and you really do see the light when you remove the blinkers.

oh yeah it is very horrible! you meet all the bloodiest christians on a daily basis.....my mum was an atheist and my dad died when i was little....she didn't even go on a SINGLE date for more than 4 years and yet at school a gropup of christian parents shouted at her calling her a whore....for the simple reason that she was an atheist!

and when i didn't succeed in my first job interview, people from my neighbourhood said that may be that was because i wasn't "touched by God"...sheesh...i could go on and on....but guess those things go on everywhere...

I never lived in the 'America bible belt' fortunately, but I do have pretty much an idea on how it is like: The Bible belt is the 'Loire Valley' of American extremism.

It's also possible that some parts of Southern Germany are similarly religious and extreme, but never to the same extent as some parts of the U.S.

are you from america? the statement that living in certain areas of america would be like living in a horror movie is rather funny.

I live in the bible belt and the only complaint that I have is "dry counties" where you can't get alchohol. I think it's easier to be gay here than it is to get a drink, sometimes. haha

These days, living in the Bible Belt is the same as living anywhere, unless you live in a small town. People in the medium to large cities don't pry into your personal beliefs if you don't volunteer it. In smaller towns, possibly due to boredom, everyone pries into everyone else's business constantly. You would have valid concerns in such a setting.

Well, I can't speak from experience, but I have a friend who is Wiccan, who was raised in Dixie, Florida. He said that, yeah, it was pretty bad sometimes. Not so much at school, but with the adults it was HORRIBLE. Parents didn't want him hanging out with their kids.

As a sidenote, when I became a Christian seven months ago, I think he was afraid that I would react the same way other "Christians" did. He's been pleasantly surprised to notice that my attitude towards him hasn't changed at all. I still enjoy our debates, lol, and he's still very much welcome in our home.

I know what it's like to be agnostic in Arkansas (although I'm a Christian now, I was agnostic until age 20). I'm not gay, but I do frequently stand up for the rights of my students who are. I see what bigotry they have to put up with, and it makes me ill.

Hopefully this part of the country will grow up . . . SOME day. But I'm not going to hold my breath waiting.

I didn't live there, but I was a Wiccan while I visited down there. I am also bi. I didn't broadcast either of them. Some people who found out cared but most didn't. Most people accepted me as practicing some sort of Voodoo which is acceptable down there.

I lived in Memphis Tenn. for 9 years. I saw gay bars, and adult book stores everywhere. There were plenty of atheists also.

I live in the Bible belt- its not so bad. There are two queers living just down the street. We treat them like normal people and they act like normal people.
