I don't think they're popular, but I am doing that (not sure if he is also going barefoot)...I have always liked the feeling of being barefoot and wear shoes only when necessary...plus, we're getting married on the beach, so it is more acceptable. Anyone getting married indoors needs to be wearing shoes.

The heals they make you wear are awful. I am sure the shoes that go with a tux aren't comfy either.

I think that in our hectic lives these days we long for a romantic day that lends itself at least in spirit to the Bohemian lifestyle. It's still a formal ceremony, without the up-tightness. I have coordinated quite a few, typically in meadows or on beaches. It's easier to plan as far as the attire of the wedding party because usually you save money on more simple outfits instead of huge dresses and tuxes.
Good luck and I hope you find the right answer to your question.

Wearing dress shoes all day is uncomfortable. On a beach, it's just impractical.

I don't think they're that popular, but I think people tend to believe it's an "original" idea so that's why they do it - to be different. (But so many people are doing it to be different, that a lot of people end up doing the same thing!) Also, women's heeled shoes aren't very comfortable! They squish your feet, you get blisters, etc. That's the last thing a lot of people want to worry about on their wedding day! I can't walk in heels to save my life, so wearing heeled shoes or something that would rub just wouldn't work for me. I'd be more nervous about falling than about the actual ceremony. ;o) And, lastly I think women's shoes (especially white wedding shoes) are really expensive! You can easily spend over $100 on a pair of shoes you probably won't wear again, and in some cases that's a third the cost of the dress! Plus jewellery, make-up, hair, dress, etc... it really adds up!

You try walking around for hours in heels and see how comfortable you feel!
