* I like the teachings of Jesus about compassion and mercy towards others? *
The Bible Luke 19: 26 - 28
"He replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away. But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them--bring them here and kill them in front of me." After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
The Bible John 10:33 - 35
The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makes yourself God. Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, You are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
Such is merciful Jesus and the only Gods with will ever see are ourselves.

Sister,
Jesus Christ IS the Son of God, and IS God. I am not ignorant of such a concern that we haven't "seen" God. I respect your honesty, and God bless you for it.
Jesus fulfilled every one of several hundred prophecies that are logically impossible to complete by any human understandings. It's not just the basic prophecies about healing and raising the dead, although in the big picture they are wonderfull. How can a person choose to be born in a city of thier own choosing? How can a 1 or 2 year old decide to be raised in another city? If a baby could, why such an evil city?
These are not questions that I am throwing at you, these are questions I have to ask myself if am going to look past Jesus for something, or someone else.

I'm gonna go to C.S. Lewis on this one. In his book "Mere Christianity", he said the following:
"I'm trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse."
Try reading John's gospel with an open mind. Pick a translation that's easily understood by 21st century people - English Standard Version or New International Version. And keep in mind what Lewis said.

If you don't believe in God, how can you believe in his son Jesus?
The teachings of Jesus weren't just about compassion and mercy, it was about faith in God.
Is you don't belive he was the son of God because you don't believe in God, why do you think it's okay to call a mortal God? If another good person comes along, will you call him god?
If you don't believe in God, why call someone god? I think you're looking to believe in a higher power, but you're just not sure about where you stand. You want to have a good person to call god, yet you don't believe in God. Perhaps Jesus isn't the best person to follow if you don't believe in God because that will be in direct contradiction of His teachings.

you understand something many people would love to.
God can`t be proven through logical arguments, and through perfect faith in reason. People don`t define God, but he defines himself, and presents himself to us in the person of Jesus Christ.
"I am Love and Mercy itself" says Jesus, "My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or angel, has ever been able to fanthom it throughout all eternity...I let my sacret heart be opened wide for you by the lance...especially for poor sinners. Come with faith to draw graces from this fountain of mercy."

Yes - he had a lot to say that is worth listening to. You can understand and follow his example without all the supernatural / occult stuff.
I am an atheist and I find some of what he said very enlightening

If you are sincere, read the Bible. Start with the gospel of Luke or John. Keep your eyes and heart open.
