They have one stitch on their flank - but every time i take the collars off - they just try and yank the stitch out. How long before the incision has sealed? They are getting really grumpy.

The evil looks i keep getting are seriously scary - however it is funny watching then trying to get about the house and bumping into everything. They are so adorable - wouldnt be without them now.

Your vet should've told you, the stitch needs to be removed 10-14 days after the op. If your kittens are trying to pull the stitch out, you most definitely need to keep the collars on until the stitch has been removed, otherwise they are capable of re-opening the incision. If they're going to interfere with the wound they are also likely to infect it, so I'm afraid they're just going to have to put up with the collars! I'm sure they'd prefer them to having to have another op if they much up their incision site!

This idea of the Elizabethan collar being standard for spayed cats is something I have probs with.
At the shelter when the cats come back from surgery none of them have ever had collars. I am talking about kittens and cats of all ages and sizes.
Mind you the flank incision is now outmoded here and the females have a stitch in their underside.Maybe this makes a difference.
So, in answer to the question, if the stitches are annoying the kittens, check for redness and inflammation. If all is fine you can take the collars off and put some bitter bite around the site of the incision. This will stop them trying to bite the stitches and make them happier not having to wear the collars.

Well you could risk leaving him without a collar, provided you are around all the time. And it's during the night when they are most likely to sit and lick at their stitches so you'll have to sleep with him - and even then ................. I've never been able to use these collars on my hounds - they need a large size for their necks, which means being low to the ground, they hit everything including the ground, which terrifies them. This is a difficult one because obviously getting caught in it will have frightened him big time, so although maybe the best thing would be to get another one from the vet, it might not be kind, for him. The good thing is with every passing day, the healing will be that more advanced - and actually the incision for a castration isn't as big, or critical that it holds, as with a spay surgery. But it still needs to be kept clean etc. I'd phone your vet, and tell him what's happened, and take his advice. They have to have dogs who can't wear these wretched collars!!! Add - Yes, as suggested, I've heard about the softer brace type of collar - my vet doesn't keep them, but it might be worth asking your vet.

They really need to leave them on until the stitch is removed and the area healed, so maybe up to 2 weeks. I know they are grumpy (my cat was mad at me) but it is worth it, both financially and for you kittens health.

Wait till the stitch is out, they'll have to bear with it until then.
