Adams signed the Treaty of Tripoli (June 7, 1797). Article 11 states:

"The government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion."

From Jefferson's biography:

"...an amendment was proposed by inserting the words, 'Jesus Christ...the holy author of our religion,' which was rejected-----'By a great majority in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and the Mohammedan, the Hindoo and the Infidel of every denomination.'"

"Christianity...[has become] the most perverted system that ever shone on man....Rogueries, absurdities and untruths were perpetrated upon the teachings of Jesus by a large band of dupes and importers led by Paul, the first great corrupter of the teaching of Jesus." --- Thomas Jefferson

"Religion and government will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together." -- James Madison

Google BOTH sides of the argument, not your narrow view.
Riddle me this, batman: WHY would someone who supposedly hates religion endorse it so much? Why not make America a Godless regime? Some of the first settlers in this country were here for RELIGIOUS FREEDOM.
The first school textbook in this country was a BIBLE.

Other quotes by Thomas Jefferson :" Indeed I tremble for my country, when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever."
"I have sworn upon the ALTER OF GOD eternal hostility against EVERY form of tyranny over the mind of man." (that includes restricting religious practice, even though he might not have agreed with it).
"God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time: the hand of force may destroy BUT CANNOT DISJOIN THEM."
The largest church service IN THE COUNTRY was held in the hallowed halls of CONGRESS. During the Jefferson AND Madison administration, the state basically became the church. Every Sunday. within a year after inauguration, the president of the UNITED STATES, Thomas Jefferson Regularly attended, as did James Madison during his term.
WHY? Because they KNEW that the majority of the people were of a religious conviction, and they RESPECTED it, even though they didn't AGREE with it. They knew it was GOOD for the nation.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ was also preached in the Supreme Court chambers. Their heads would spin around and they would spit up pea soup today.
The 'wall of separation' between church and state was in response to the Baptist Church inquiry about Catholicism becoming the state religion. He wasn't trying to put down any religious faith, he was saying that the government CANNOT REGULATE IT, like other countries were doing. That is why many people LEFT those countries.
People like you take OUT OF CONTEXT the words of the founding fathers, and twist them to your own perverted ways.
Many who helped pen the documents founding this country were religious zealots, some were atheists, some could care less, but THEY ALL recognized that this country would not survive if it left its religious roots.
Don't re-write history to your secular-humanist ways. Pretty soon you will say the holocaust didn't happen

The founding founders of the USA welcomed Muslims, Jews,
Buddhists, Hindus, Christians of both Protestant and Catholic persuasion, Taoists, Jainists, atheists, and people of any other religion also. We still do. What's your point? You're not asking a question just because you add a ? at the end of a sentence.

I would be very appreciative if you could send me your sources on this. The religious right bases most of the crap it spews on the idea that America was founded on religous freedom, but that it was founded as a Christian nation. Meaning you can choose what denomination of Christianity you want to belong to, but the founding fathers didn't want any other religions having their freedom. Having these quotes and knowing where they came from would be a great personal help to me in my debates with these types of people.

>>Isnt it wonderful how the founding fathers of USA welcomed the Muslims, Hindus and Jews ?<<

Yes, it is. The USA is a wonderful country and I thank the Lord I was born here. Too bad other nations are not as welcoming toward Christians as is the USA toward non-Christians.

the founding fathers where all about freedom of religion so that government could not tell you how to worship God the God that they REFER to is the one God the one who CREATED ALL MEN EQUAL

There Intention was to keep gov. out of Religion not Religion out of gov. but that the men of gov. would make decision based on there knowledge of GOD

WHY IS IT THAT ALL THE PEOPLE LIKE YOU THINK IT IS OKAY TO HAVE NONBELIEVERS INFLUENCE GOV. BUT BELIEVERS SHOULD JUST SET BY THE WAY SIDE. YOU CAN TEACH MY CHILD EVOLUTION BUT I CAN NOT TEACH YOUR CHILD CREATION. NOW HOW DOES YOUR VIEW OF FREEDOM WORK AGAIN AND WHAT ARE YOU GUYS SO SCARED OF. LETS GET ALL THE VIEWS AND MAKE OUR OWN FREE CHOICE, WHICH IS WHAT THE FOUNDING FATHERS HAD IN MIND AS WELL AS GOD THE RIGHT TO BE A FREE AGENT

I would disagree with at least one of your quoted statements. However, I agree whole-heatedly with your initial statement. Indeed, it is wonderful that our forefathers welcomed Muslims, Hindus, Jews, etc.
