I have a cat that has worms but the treatment takes 14 days. Hes been on it for 6 days, but he's still losing so much muscle and weight. He's eating and drinking quite fine, but the vet said it just takes time. He looks like he's running out of time. What is a good food/s or supplements to help the poor old guy from losing so much weight 'til he's all better? Dude will eat just about anything even veggies. Like a dog in a cat suit. He has a long treatment because he was so wormy they said a sudden or quick one would hurt him. These meds are supposed to kill all the worms cats get, but my main worry is he's got so skinny and weak.
No offense to vets, but ours isn't much help except in the money taking department.
Thank you from me and Nash for your help.

So far these answers are really great. He does drink water and he eats adult cat food and I have seen worms in his feces. I know he can't have a stronger medicine, I just wanted to help him get his strength and weight back while he's being medicated. He can have all the food and water he wants with the meds. which is lucky because starving is out. He has food and water available all the time because he's never been a gobbler so he can eat when he wants.
I'm going shopping now for kitten chow, tuna and eggs. :)
You are all so helpful and kind. I wish I could pick you all as best answer.

Hi there,

I am a vet tech at a feline only practice. We very often have cats that are really on the brink and must get their weight up fast

Kitten food will help, but I also would like to suggest what I almost never do - Human food. To be more precise human baby food, strained meat varieties. Baby food for human is calorically dense, and while kitten food is perfect for the needs of a growing kitten ... want you want to get weight on fast is MORE nutrients - baby food is designed for a growing human who would require higher levels of nutrients.

Another great way to get kitty back to a healthy weight is sardines in oil. Its a great source of muscle building protein and the Omega oils in it are fantastic for rebuilding your cats strength. Sliced (all natural) deli turkey as an extra treat will also help

I also recommend you see another vet. I think your vet is missing something here. You can look on the American Association of Feline Practitioners website to find one who specializes in treating cats. Unfortunately, many general vets center their practices on dogs and have no real expertise in cats. Here's the site:

Good luck!

Kitten food has a lot more calories than regular food. You didn't say what you're feeding him, but I'd start with dry food, which builds better muscle mass than wet food. Leave a bowl out all the time. Give him some wet kitten food, too. In both cases, give him as much as he can eat. Make sure he gets enough water. Test for dehydration by pulling up a fold of skin on his shoulders. If it snaps back right away he's okay. If it takes awhile for it to return to normal he's probably dehydrated. You can give him Pedialyte instead of water. It's an electrolyte solution that's used when babies get diarrhea to keep them from getting dehydrated. My vet recommended it when one of my cats was sick. I had to use a big syringe to give her water, though. Not fun, but necessary at that time. Don't ever give him milk, though, because cats are usually lactose intolerant. Hey Nash -- get better soon.

You can feed him either tuna or mackerel in a can with a raw egg beaten well and mixed together with his regular cat food. This will provide him with extra protein to help build back muscle tissue. This works great. I have used this on rescued cats that were nearly starved to death. Some were close to death. Add a little white corn syrup not much about a teaspoon to get his sugar level up a little and give him a little more energy.
If your cat has sever worms your vet is right. To suddenlt give him enough to kill all the worms with your cat in a weak state can kill him. Go to a pet store and read some of the deworming lables and the warnings.

Try canned KITTEN food / kitten milk. It is way higher in fat. If he wont eat moist food then try mixing a little of the dry powered milk with a tad of water and mix with the dry food. Another thing I did for my ex's kitty was give her chicken noodle soup BROTH. She wouldn't eat or drink and was super hot to the touch. She got some liquids in her and slept it off. She did just fine.

Anyways, good luck. And try feeding in several smaller portions instead of a lot at once so he doesn't puke up all of the progress that he has made!

Perhaps you should ask your vet if your cat has other issues, because it sounds like it. Or ask another vet. In the mean time, your vet can offer you a tasty convalesence food, high in calories to boost your cat up, something like Hills a/d.

Does sound like more than just worms, maybe hyperthyroidism (eating lots and getting skinnier and losing muscle mass are classic signs).

Kitten food has more calories than cat food. You can also try giving him some kitten formula. You can buy it at a pet store. It has measurements for kittens and for cats who are nursing so they get all the nutrients they need. It might also help your cat. Good luck.

I would try kitten food. My cat got outside and got a bad case of worms and dropped from like 12 pounds to like 4 pounds (adult cat). My vet put her on meds and told us to give her kitten food because it has more of the vitamins and such that they need. She started gaining weight in no time!

Making dietary changes is your first line of defense in treating hypothyroidism. Learn here https://tr.im/v3fh3

Many people with hypothyroidism experience crippling fatigue and brain fog, which prompts reaching for non-nutritional forms of energy like sugar and caffeine. I’ve dubbed these rascals the terrible twosome, as they can burn out your thyroid (and destabilize blood sugar).

1. Just say no to the dietary bungee cord. Greatly reduce or eliminate caffeine and sugar, including refined carbohydrates like flour, which the body treats like sugar. Make grain-based carbohydrates lesser of a focus, eating non-starchy vegetables to your heart’s content.

2. Up the protein. Protein transports thyroid hormone to all your tissues and enjoying it at each meal can help normalize thyroid function. Proteins include nuts and nut butters; quinoa; hormone- and antibiotic-free animal products (organic, grass-fed meats, eggs, and sustainably-farmed fish); and legumes.
