Spray them with a water bottle everytime they do something inappropriate like jumping on the counter.

Wires: Get some tygon (clear plastic) tubing with an inside diameter same as or larger than the cord. Slit one side of the tubing and press the wire into it. This is a whole lot easier than trying to police the cats and train them not to do it. Younger cats will do it anyway whenever you're out of the room.

Counters: Put double-sided tape on the counters. The cats will jump up but will hate the feel of the tape. You can also get a spray bottle of water and yell "NO' and squirt them. Of course this only works when you're in the room. There are also electrified mats that give a slight jolt when the cat lands on it. These are more useful for stuffed furniture.

However, the easiest thing by far is to NOT let your cats have free roam of the house when you're asleep or when you're not home. You already know you need to child-proof your house for a 3 year-old if you have a cat. Now imagine a 3 year-old loose in the house. I prefer to make things easy for the cats (since they sleep most of the time anyway) and give them their own room. Of course, I put the tubing on the cords and keep stuff put away in the kitchen, but I prefer to keep the kitties out of trouble whenever I can. Makes all of us happy.

I don't have faith in the training method... since it is impossible to be consistent. You're not there all the time. It is likely that they will learn to not do it WHEN YOU'RE AROUND. They are too smart for their own good....

One new method that I heard recently is to put cardboard near the edge of the counter, hanging off. Then, when the cat jumps on the cardboard, the cardboard is likely to flip, thus teaching the cat that it's not a safe surface. I haven't try it yet, but I am looking to implement it. Worth a try.

As for the wire, keep them neat. If they dangle, they will look like toys. If they're all tied up neat, shouldn't be a problem. LOL, it's like child proofing, except it's cat proofing :)

My cat is now very brave and we started having squirt bottle face offs. He would stand on the kitchen table and stare at me while I squirted him. Our only weapon against our cat is his instinctive fear.

First of all, never leave food on the counter to "reward" kitty.

My husband has a nerf ball gun that has a motor in it. We only had to shoot at the cat once. If we catch him doing something bad, all we have to do is push the button to make the motor rev up. When we are not home, we leave the gun on the counter (or other forbidden surface).

I also have a stuffed leapard that is bigger than our cat. If you push its paw it makes a roaring sound. I chased our cat around the house with it to make sure he was good and scared. I can leave the stuffed leapard on a forbidden surface and the cat won't go near it.

The advantage of these methods is that I don't have to be there to "remind" kitty. Plus, he's afraid of the gun and the stuffed cat - not me or my hands.

The spray bottle technique which has already been mentioned is almost foolproof. Spray the water into kitty's face. Cats absolutely hate this. Kitty will learn where not to go and what not to do very quickly. Cats are smarter than we think they are. Yes, cats can be trained.

Squirt guns work well too. Also you can get covers that they use for car wiring. they are made of plastic and work well. Also you can use zip ties to keep you wires together and out of the way. The plastic covers work the best though.

I agree: Squirt bottle. My cat would only do it when I wasn't home. So, I put scotch tape on paper - folded the tape around so that it was sticky side up - placed the paper right on the spot the cat jumps on to get on top of my refrigerator. When he jumped on it, he got all wrapped up in scotch tape and paper. It wasn't a pleasant experience for him and he quit doing it.

Cover the counters with foil or something that makes noise when it falls. Paint the wires with clear nail polish-the taste is nasty.

Well, if the cat bites through the wire, it'll learn it's lesson won't it? We always used a spray bottle on my kitty.
