Spanish is the major second language in North America. In eastern Canada, French is used quite a bit, as well. French and Spanish have enough in common that if you can learn one, you can probably learn the other pretty easily. With these three languages, you can be at ease anywhere in North America.

North america only has 2 countries so it's pretty easy to choose.
In addition to English, Spanish will help you in many of the US states while French is the language to travel Canada.
By sheer numbers, there will be more Spanish speakers than French speakers. So I would recommend Spanish before French.

You don't say where you're from or which part of North America. It's a pretty large continent. If Canada, then French. If Mexico or the American Southwest, Spanish.
