Atheism comes from the Greek, actually. It is derived from "a," which means without, and "Theos," which means God.
And people were atheistic in so many places before America was discovered.

Atheism began the first time someone adamantly doubted a God's existence when the idea was explained to him/her.
This might have occurred when people denied the gods of Greece, but probably much earlier. It may have even been before Judaism existed.

No, I think that's basically a European intellectual phenomenon. That is, the people who lived in countries dominated by the Catholic church who rejected the control of the church over their intellectual activities did not go join some other religion, but rejected the whole concept of religion.
