Generally, to get Microsoft Office you would buy it from a computer store, or order it online from any reputable online shop that sells software. www.ebuyer.co.uk sells it for £115 - http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/99293 . This is Microsoft Office 2003 Basic, which includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook. It is possible to get Word and Excel separately, but you are unlikely to save much, if anything.
Noticing earlier answers, I think getting 2003 instead of 2007 would be a good decision for the same reason - 2007 is not so easilt backwards compatible with 97, 2000, 2003 etc. versions of Office.
Alternatively, if £115 is too much money (which it probably is) then go to www.openoffice.org - this is completely free and legal, as it isn't a copy of Office, it is a new set of programs which can save in Word and Excel formats.

These are commercial programs... sold by Microsoft.
You can buy them. Any computer software shop will sell them to you (but they will probably sell you a version of Microsoft Office instead...)
You can download them but they will be illegal copies and you are opening yourself to the risk of prosecution, hacked software and no ability to update with fixes.
You can go to openoffice.org and download the Open Office bundle that includes equivalents of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook... and the word processor and spreadsheet will read and write Word and Excel files quite happily and it's free.
I've been using Open Office on Linux for ages now, swapping files with Microsoft users and there have been no issues with compatibility and only a few minor issues with page layout changing. Plus the software is as easy to use as Microsoft's though the menu layout is a bit different.

You can buy the programs at the Windows website and download them immediately. If you're a student or teacher, you should be able to use the Student and Teacher edition for a lot less $$.
Alternatively, you can try OpenOffice, which is completely compatible with OfficeXP.
Be wary of the newest version of Office - it uses a radically new format which is not compatible with older versions of Office unless you specifically save in the older format.
