They probably would be an underground movement, political as much as intellectual, and possibly have created a revolution by now.

Hi,
Do you really think that America is a free country. I know it CALLS itself 'the land of the free', but it has more restricions placed on its citizens than almost any other civilised country.
You cannot cross the road on foot (Jaywalking) you cannot live in certain towns (like Lindon, WA,) if you are black, Mexican or even Roman Catholic.
Yes, there are laws of equality laid down in your constitution, but in practice they are ignored. People do NOT have total religious freedom, nor are they all treated as equals.
Political correctness runs wild...it's damned near impossible to enjoy banter with anyone of the opposite sex, or different ethnicity, or sexual preference without running a severe risk of prosecution. Just check your newspapers every day.
So while atheists may, possibly, have been persecuted for their beliefs (or non-belief) they may have had the upper hand and the people who do believe could have been the oppressed. Maybe it's just lucky that when the constitution was drawn up the leaders included the provision that 'God was on the side of the right', so he was 'built in' to the country's doctrines.
And think about it...how free are you?

However, the fact is, is that America IS a free country, so what basis in reality does you question or any answer have to anyone?
But, playing along for the sake of playing along, as one who does NOT consider themselves to be an atheist, I have, however observed many atheists, and it appears to me that most of them are 'serious thinkers'--which is NOT how I would tend to characterize--or the first thing that pops into my mind when thinking about the thoughts, attitudes and behaviors of a large (or equal) number christians that I might compare atheists to.
Hint: Just because you have a brain or brain activity, does NOT mean you think (compare, evaluate, etc)
Therefore, being 'serious thinkers' I believe if America were not a free country, that they might be the first ones to think of a way to either free our country--or turn it into a free country--or even leave and establish a new and free country where they and anyone else who wished to believe as they desired to COULD.
Other than, let's say--waiting around--accepting the loss or lack of freedom--and waiting for God or Jesus to arrive and free them.
HInt: There is NO such thing as a 'benevolent dictator'. A dictator is still a dictator--benevolent or not.
Regards,

eelfins, what planet do you live on?
When theists were in total control, it was called "The Dark Ages": Science and independent thought were actively repressed, and human rights of any kind were unheard of.
As for communism: Communism and atheism are two entirely different things. The Communist Totalitarian governments weren't just anti-religion, they were anti-anything that threatened to rival their power. Including freethinkers and atheists.
If America were not a free country, ie: a Totalitarian state, the same sort of thing would happen to atheists as would happen to anyone else who didn;t toe the line.

a million. there is no such element as an atheist fundamentalist. 2. i do no longer thank any god for some thing, because it extremely is my perception. 3. i do no longer elect to get rid of your freedom of religion, I do in basic terms not elect it to do some thing with my existence. similar is going for you, i anticipate. 4. Mythology and faith are an identical element, and could be dealt with as such 5. i do not stay or ever will stay in Saudia Arabia, so it extremely is inappropriate. 6. Atheists aren't to any extent further unavoidably communists. i respect that you imagine that even with the reality that. is going to instruct you won't be able to be taken heavily.

I would relocate to a free country.. my freedom of religion and choice is very important to me.. I am glad to have been born in America instead of within a country that doesn't have our freedoms.. Many countries with opressive societies are very difficult to leave..

They would continue to not believe in god. What makes you think that if this country wasn't free it would be religious, may be it would eliminate all religion and be an atheist country.

I admire your faith in America being the fount of all intellectual thinking but I regret that it is very far from the truth (and it seems to be declining even further).
