It is someone who claims to speak for God, but, in truth, does not. Some are easy to spot because their doctrine is plainly at odds with scripture. Some are more crafty and have been able to deceive a great number of people. They're subtle in that they blend their lies with just the right amount of truth to make their falsehoods easier to swallow. Remember, that's what Satan did to tempt Jesus in the desert - he quoted scripture.

The main thing is to watch out for anyone or any belief system that tries to divert our main focus away from Christ, His divinity, and/or His redemptive work on the cross. Even if it's something subtle and something that seems harmless. Placing your focus on, putting your trust in, or glorifying anyone or anything other than God is wrong... no matter if it's another person, an angel, a saint, etc.

Here's what the Bible says:

"But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping." -2 Peter 2:1-3

"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world." -1 John 4:1-4

"For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness." -2 Corinthians 11:13-15

"At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect—if that were possible. So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time." -Mark 13:21-23

"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves." -Matthew 7:15

A false prophet is a person who deceives people, maybe because of demonic possesion, or for their own personal motives. You spot a false prophet easily because what they say doesn't come true, (spiritual discernment from the Holy Spirit helps too).

I'm afraid I would assume any prophet these days is false. But then, I don't know, really, what the characteristics of a "true prophet" would be, other than a scientist making a reasonable projection based on demonstrable evidence.

Someone who claims to be a prophet but isn't. Would be like if you said you were a prophet. First grade stuff.

A person who thinks they have heard from God or lies about it and prophecies about things God has not told him, so therefore when things do not come to pass they are a false prophet. Many of them around today.

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that [spirit] of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Can't.

That's why I avoid all prophets.

Jesus is FAR more than a Prophet, so I don't avoid him

GOD is far more than a Prophet, so I don't avoid him

Everyone else put's their shoes on just like I do, one foot at a time.

A person who pretends they are presenting God's message, when they are simply promoting their own enterprise.
