I'm not sure what it is now. When I was in the service, you enlisted 4 years active duty, and 2 years inactive reserve.

8 years. All contracts for the military are for 8 years. After doing your active duty time, you have the remainder in the Inactive Ready Reserves (IRR).

That depends on your enlistment. In 1984 I enlisted as a jet mech. (Airedale) for 6 yrs. 4 active/2 reserve. At the end of my active duty I chose not to re up and went back to civie life.
