The radio and the speakers must be grounded, obviously the radio is or the lights and cd wouldn't come on, but the speakers too must be grounded seperately.

There are a number of possibilities...

Was the CD player new or used when it was installed?
-If it was used it could have a bad amplifier
How many total speakers are connected to the CD player?
-If he wired the speakers improperly it could be placing the CD player into protection mode
Why is a mechanic installing the CD player?
-It is very easy to confuse the wires which will lead (of course) to the system not operating.

I would recommend brining the vehicle to a specialty shop and having it diagnosed and repaired. Sounds like the mechanic installed something improperly.
Anything else I can help with feel free to contact me.

Sounds like the speakers still aren't wired correctly. A 70's Ford might have a chassis-grounded or common-grounded speaker wiring system, which isn't compatible with a modern high-power CD player. Each speaker must have individual (+) and (-) wires connected directly to the CD player, and they can't be in contact with chassis ground anywhere. It might not be practical to do this using the stock speaker wiring; in that case you'll need to run new wire to each speaker.

Replace your mechanic.

Or, test the speakers from the wires that come up to your CD Player with a 9V battery, get noise? speakers are good. No noise? make sure your balance and fader are center, also make sure you are mixing the wires from the cd player right Look at the graphic again. If non of this works, the outputs from the cd player are burned, buy a new one.

yes the ford size is 1.5 DIN and normal is DIN, remove your old stereo by jamming 4 long nails, thin screwdrivers or welding rods into the holes either side of the casette hole, pull apart in opposite directions like this < > and withdraw the player. now go to halfords and buy a stereo surround for ford cars (£15 odd) fix that that into posistion. now you have a regular DIN size for your new stereo, fit the new stereo cage into that and hey presto! its worth noting that ford dont use standard ISO connections for the stereo wiring, you can either cut the connections off and wire up using connecter blocks (cheap option) or again go to halfrauds and buy a connecting wire that bridges the two types but that costs £15. easy peasy.
