In my large city PD in Cali....
Our real CSI photograph, document and collect evidence. They don't do any DNA processing or other crap. They hand that stuff over to a crime lab with guys in white coats. Those lab coat guys never leave their lab, they just do lab work and hand the results back to the PD. The CSI don't interview anyone or do any investigating. They record facts and hand info over to the detectives. The detectives do the footwork. They work together to solve crimes.
I think CSI is a pretty entertaining show but is far from accurate, as most TV shows are.

Ok so you've asked about one of my favorite things to talk about when it comes to these shows. CSI is a little exaggerated when it puts on its shows. The Crime Scene Technician plays a huge role in solving crimes because they are the scientists, the technicians and the doctors. However, they do not as a normal part of their jobs, make arrests or interview witness's. They supply all of their findings to the detectives who then put the pieces together and make arrests.
Law and order, which by the way is my favorite television show of all time, is the most accurate, excpet for the fact that almost all of their crimes are solved in an hour. It usually takes months for arrests to be made in homimcide cases, even when the detectives know who did it. They have to build lots and lots of evidence, The police usually only get one shot at a suspect.
I hope this helps answer your question

Keeping in mind that very few Police depts in this country have the budget to have anything even remotely close to a "CSI" type forensic lab, the people who do the primary work in solving a case are the Detectives. They do the footwork, the interviews, the paperwork, and the testimony (when a case actually makes it to trial). If you want to know what really happens during an investigation, watch The First 48 on A&E. It's not a drama, but an actual look at the process of solving major crimes. Very good show.

Most of the time it is the criminal who solves it for the cops. Either he rolls over on himself during a interview, or more often than not, someone snitches him out. Its amazing how much information the police get from somebody when they provide info as opposed to going to the jail!!!
If I had to pick which one is closest to reality it would be Law and Order. Interviewing people and getting informants are way easier and cheaper than the high-tech, non-existent CSI type of tools.

the crime scene techs gather the evidence and build the case against whooever is a suspect and get the proof they need to get them to trial and as in law and order that is the hearing of the gathered evidence and its there job to get them convicted so they all play a part in solving the crimes

Typically whenever a crime occurs, a police detective is assigned the case. The case is HIS, he can enlist the help of other detectives, agencies, evidence techs (CSI), forensics, or any other specialist that he has access to. It is a team effort. They will report their findings directly to the lead detective on the case. It is his decision who he enlists for assistance, but they ASSIST him.

The Real Solver of the Crimes is the people who discover them because if it wasn't for them, Evidence might be removed by other sources and make the crime Harder.
