Can someone tell me about gift giviing in Malaysia? When do people give gifts? How does one accept a gift?

It must be an appropriate gift and shouldn't be too personal unless you know the individual well. The type of gift would depend on the persons status. If it's a general worker you may consider something they would display in their home.

A gift from your culture is almost always appreciated. Give with two hands as it demonstrates complete intent. Receive a gift the same way, never with one hand, no matter how small.

If the gift is wrapped you should wait to open it. This supposedly comes from the idea your body language may show disappointment and it is the giving that's important.
