I know some of you on here are doberman owners/breeders and i want to know after you get their ears cropped (if you decide to go that route) do they have to wear the collar/cone around their neck to keep them from messing with their ears or will they be alright without it? my vet says to keep one on mine but the breeder that i got my dobe from says they don't make their pups wear the protective collar....so should i only put it on him when i can't watch him, like while he's in his crate asleep, or just leave it on him all the time?
also, sorry this is like a side question but i went with a crop between a medium and a show cut. Anyone with a dobie with show cut or longer cut ears and if so how long did it take them to stand?
Thnks

as for people that are going to answer about ear cropping being cruel and all that BS save it. It's no more cruel than getting your dog spayed or neutered, just another still a surgical procedure.

OK BATGRL DID I EVER SAY THAT CROPPING MY DOGS EARS WAS TO EXTEND ITS LIFE? NO AND LIKE I SAID BEFORE I DIDN'T ASK THIS QUESTION TO DEBATE CROPPING EARS SO THEREFORE PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO RESPOND WITH THEIR OPINIONS ON EARCROPPING THEY ARE NOT NEEDED BECAUSE IT IS THE DOG OWNERS DECISION WHICH I HAVE ALREADY MADE, SO IF YOU DON'T HAVE ADVICE TO GIVE ME ABOUT MY QUESTION REGARDING THE EAR CROP THEM PLEASE DON'T ANWERS.

I have never used the e-collar after a crop. They dogs were fine & their ears stands straight. The only thing to worry about is the after care. Always make sure the bandages are changed & retaped properly!! I always went with the Military / Pet crop. Here is a site that will help you out http://www.dobermanclub.org/Buying_Puppy/ears.html

Practically every good Doberman breeder will do the cropping/docking for you. An experienced breeder will have a vet who excels at the type of crops they like and you know you'll get a good job, unlike asking the nearest vet to try it. The breeder will also show you how to tape up the ears so the cartilage forms correctly. Ear cropping is a pretty minor surgery done on puppies at about 7-12 weeks. They will be sore afterwards, but this won't last very long. Many dogs don't even notice or care. I would compare an ear crop to a spay/neuter: voluntary, simple, and not a particularly painful procedure.

The dog does not need to wear the e collar when you are there to supervise him. It may even be difficult for a dog to eat when it's wearing the "lampshade", so it probably needs to come off at least some of the time.

Make sure your dog goes home from the vet's with pain medication since he will be much less likely to try to scratch at his ears if he is comfortable.

Sorry, for one thing you are wrong, it is much harder on them to get their ears cropped than it is to be spayed/neutered.. I have gotten puppies just neutered, and just cropped.. The puppies that are natural eared / neutered are back to normal that night.. The cropped puppies take several days to get back to feeling normal. They play and they eat, but they aren't feeling normal..

Anyhow.. I do not use the collar on our dogs .. I don't find that they bother the cropped ears. But if I had one that was scratching and bothering the ears ( which they don't do if you keep them properly clean ) then I would use the collar so that they weren't ripping out the stitches..

If he is bugging his ears, put the collar on, if you suspect he is bugging them when you can't watch him, put the collar on. If he is leaving them alone, then don't bother with the collar, It will push on the ears from the back and cause him to be bugged about his ears.. The collar sometimes is more trouble than it protects.

Ears can take along time to come up.. You have to keep them taped, you cannot let them go with out taping them for any length of time. Can never let thems sleep on untaped ears. Tape the ears up properly, smell them daily, untape approx 5 days, clean them thoroughly, and before he goes for his nap, retape the ears. Doesn't matter if you don't feel like it, if you are tired, busy or what, tape the ears back up.

I have had most of my ears standing by 14 weeks of age. Occasionally thru teething one ear will come down, but tape just the one and it'll come back up in a few days.. If you don't get the ears well established before they start to teeth, then you are looking at approx 5 or 6 months of taping. Once they are done teething, then the ears will be more likely to stand.

I get my ears done medium long, but I have a couple w/ long show crops.. It's taping them consistently keeping them taped, watching them, making sure the ear doesn't get infected.. Taping them correctly, staying on it..
The longest I have had to tape ears was 10 months. Wasn't even a long show crop.
The length only has a very little to do with how long it takes to get the ear up, or whether they will even stand. Our vet says that only 85% of all ears cropped ever stand.
It is how the ears are on the head. If they have a low earset, it will take a whole lot longer to get them to stand. If their ears sit nice and high on the head, they'll stand quicker. It also has alot to do with the thickness of the ear leather.. A thick ear takes longer to come up than a thinner ear.

lol.....where's "DP" when you need him (he's/she's a member here who knows all about dobbie's lol) anyways.....I wouldn't think the collar would be needed, thats more for keeping a dog from gnawling on itself (tho I guess their thinking about him pawing or scratching) IF he's being supervised & it's cumbersome for him I would remove it for awhile...give him a break. The vet is playing it safe, and thats probably a good way to go ;)

NOPE, they do ***NOT*** need the "elizabethan collar" IF their owners WATCH them!

Even if they fuss when not under DIRECT supervision, that's no big deal. Might need to be re-taped but you need to that anyway.
ALWAYS listen to a REPUTABLE BREEDER,not some dingbat vet!!!

THANK YOU having the GUTS to "DOPE-SLAP" the AR/humaniac/peta-NUTZ,btw!!!
You are 1000% correct! It's NOT "cruel" or "mean" or any other LIE they spew *&* it's YOUR DOG!!!

Neutering extends life - how does cropping ears extend your dog's life?
Talk about BS.....
Cropping ears is done for YOUR benefit, not the dog's. Deal with it.
