help me with a problem I’ve had for some time now. I don’t know if it’s possession or not, but it’s likely. When I’m alone, I can pray. But when I’m in church, when the whole place is full of the Holy Spirit, I can’t pray… I can’t pay attention… I feel this battle in me between my urges inside and some nameless something to NOT do it (it being speaking in tongues, or just praying aloud, or praying period sometimes, or singing in church, or lifting a hand in praise, or falling to my knees in worship, etc.). Sometimes, when my fiance and I get into huge fights, I suddenly get depressed for no good reason and fall catatonic. Now this particular problem is getting worse. Usually, I hear and see and remember what goes on. But tonight it happened again. I was standing outside by my fence…and that’s the last thing I remember. I “woke up” leaning over on the little bench in front of my driveway against the house. According to my fiance i was motionless and catatonic. I remember nothing.

As a Christian who does have personal experience with demonic presences, I can tell you that you are likely experiencing two things. First, I think that you are not possessed. I think instead that what is going on is that Satan is trying to steer you away from God and he is terribly uncomfortable in the house of God and around other Christians whose faith in God is strong enough that the demons feel threatened. I think that you are being taunted by Satan and his demons, but are not possessed by them. The thing to do in that situation is to continue praying. While in church and in situations when you feel powerless, pray to God with sincerity and faith and ask God to bind Satan and his demons and chase them away. Satan knows that if you don't believe in God's power to do this, then you will be powerless. To fight demonic presence, you need to tap into God's power. To do that, you must have faith that God can and will defeat Satan. God doesn't need you to have faith, but God won't necessarily help you with this until you choose faith in Him over fear of Satan. God wants to see your faith.

Second, I think you might have a medical condition going on. Being catatonic and not remembering what happened after you stood by your fence tells me that you blacked out somehow. Not everything mysterious is of the devil. I would advise you to seek medical attention because blacking out and having no memory of what transpired can be a serious medical situation that needs attention. My brother has a seizure disorder and takes medication for it. He has many "mini-seizures" when he blacks out and has no recollection of what happened since his last recalled memory of doing a particular thing. Not saying it is a seizure disorder - just saying you could have a health problem that needs medical attention.

I would therefore encourage you to be in prayer to God, to have faith that God can and will defeat Satan, and then to pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, whose name Satan fears and dreads hearing when said with faith. I would also encourage you to see a doctor. Best wishes and God bless you.

This could be something simple, like an undiagnosed physical problem. Some of the symptoms you describe resemble narcolepsy, which can start appearing in late teens or early adult years. You could investigate that. There could also be adult attention deficit disorder, which can be partially addressed by busying your hands and part of your brain with some other task while you are in church attempting to worship (knitting, taking notes, etc. -- these distract the part of the brain that wants to fidget).
However, I have experience, both on my own and in trying to help a Christian friend, with demonic oppression. (I do not believe a Christian can actually be possessed, but it can look very similar.) My friend heard voices screaming at her not to listen to the sermon in church, or Christian music being played in the room. In another friend's case, he had actually been diagnosed with a medical problem -- multiple personality disorder -- but seemed to also be experiencing Satanic attacks USING the MPD.
In my personal experience, we were treating depression and anxiety as psycho-medical problems, with some success, but there was one recurring obsessive behavior pattern that would not yield to treatment. When I shifted focus and began to wonder if this pattern was being triggered by demonic involvement, the whole situation changed. Somebody who had more spiritual discernment than I do "saw" what appeared to be a demon controlling this behavior pattern of mine. So we rebuked the demon, and did everything else I knew how to do from reading and hearing about deliverance ministries -- and the demon left, and the behavior pattern disappeared.
My thought is that there may be a medical condition, and the devil, delighted to use anything and everything to keep you from worshipping the Lord, is using the medical condition to attack you. Check for a medical condition, and get treatment if necessary. Then, WITH help from other Christians, address the possible demonic oppression separately, by rebuking the spirits and praying for the protection of the blood of Jesus over you. You could also pray through the armor of God in Ephesians 6. The rebuking and the praying will probably have to be done more than once, as the devil will not give up easily when he has had some success in hindering your Christian life.

The Catholic Church believes in and does deal with possession. There are numerous books that speak on the subject. However, sometimes there are medical explanations for what look like "possessions". The Church recommends that you seek medical treatment before resorting to a self-diagnosis of demonic possession.

See a doctor and get some help.

God bless.

When you say church. Is it possible the church is not a church but a cult? Do you feel comfortable there. Possessed, I don't think so, but spiritual attack is possible. It could be a whole lot of things, have you been to see a doctor? That is the first thing I would be doing.

san: This does not sound like "demonic" possession to me. You MAY be experiencing demonic INFLUENCE - there's a hugh difference. A better question is this. What are you doing to entertain this influence? Are you dabbling in Ouija boards, or some other form of practice, which opens your mind to influence? Go and have yourself a good physical examination and explain the symptoms to your M.D. practitioner.

Not being a doctor I can only guess. It sounds like a stress induced anxiety problem. Maybe its narcolepsy. I find I have problems praying and concentrating in church too.

You may have had an early childhood trauma or it may be any number of things other than posession. Yours is a more unusual form of Christianity. It sounds quite stressful to me. Try another type of church with a more calming and gentle atmosphere. I think that that, will make a world of difference to you rpersonal well being and your spiritual growth.

Peace!

that sounds like catatonic schizophrenia, you need to command that out in the name of Jesus. take authority. you are a child of the living God. Everything has to answer to God. so command the demonds out in the name of Jesus. When you hear something ungodly wisper into your ear... tell them to shut up. also if you have olive oil in your house, pray over it and ask God that he anoints this oil so that everything it touches no evil can set on it. put it on things that are touched often. sometimes people carrie things on them that are demonic. doorknobs, drawers, computers, phones, chairs couches. etc. you do not need a lot of oil. just anoint your head and say in the name of Jesus and mean it and then pray and light rub things with a light amount of oil. and pray as you do this and say I command everything that is not of God to leave this house at once and satan get the behind me. also any kind of doorway or window you should anoing the perimeter. reading psalm 91 is also a good tool to use.

In Jesus name I command anything that is not of You to get out of this girl's life and love her Father and show her that you are always there to protect her. Amen

If God is with us, who could be against us. Romans

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. 1 John

Also maybe you should try a different church. that could have demonic bondages in it.
