My Whippet did that, only it was cat poop. I started feeding him a supplement called NUPRO. I got it at dog shows and I think you can get it through pet supply catalogs. He stopped eating "kitty cookies" while on it. When I stopped using the supplement (due to financial constraints) he started with the kitty cookies again. At that time I happened to be reading a book (I think it was called "Pet Allergies:Remedy for an Epidemic") that said coprophasia can sometimes be caused by a trypsin deficiency. Sure enough, when I looked at the ingredients list, it had trypsin in it.
I know some puppies will eat their poop. Denying them access by cleaning up asap usually helps them outgrow it. Feeding a premium food like Nutro, Iams, etc...may also help (there will be less to pick up, too.) If it continues or becomes excessive, have the vet take a look and see if he has a medical problem. You might even want to do that soon, just to be sure. They can get some gross parasites by eating infected poop.

This is fairly normal. Most dogs will grow out of it, but until then one of the tricks I've heard is to put meat tenderizer in the dog's food, which makes it taste bad. I remember seeing a supplement at PetSmart that does the same thing, but I couldn't find it online. The condition is called Coprophagia, so you can do some research on that. Good luck :)

Ugh me too!!! Yuck! We got a dog about 6 weeks ago and he tries to do this. We are training him not to. Our other dog did this as a puppy and we just pulled her quickly away from the poo when she started to smell it. We always have her on a leash outside so this is how we were able to pull her quickly away and say "NO"! This stopped her after awhile but it tooks months. We are still working on our one year old who we adopted 6 weeks ago. When he tries to eat poo, we brush his teeth if we suspect he got any of it in his mouth. If you don't leash your dog and it's his own poo in the yard, go to a pet store and they can give you something to sprinkle on his food that will make him not like the smell of his poo when he digests the product and poops it out. Good luck! I know how yucky this is!

yup my dog has done it before a lot of times! when i catch him doing it, he picks up the poop and runs off coz he knows im gonna stop him.

reasons:

main cause--the poop smells like food
or maybe he hasnt eaten yet
or he's finding something to chew.

the moment you see it stop him immediately.
i think you have to change the food too. i was feeding him artificial food/factory-made when he was doing this, when i changed my food to natural, he didnt do it anymore.

clean up/away the poop immediately so he wont attemp eating it.

when we leave our dogs to do it again, he will surely get some health problems.

if he ate his poop more than thrice, call the vet. theyll advice you to give him meds to flush it out.or visit the vet, coz sometimes eating poop comes with eating other stuff too like plastic or wood, anything accesible to the dog, especially if you have a pup whose teeth are growing.

hope i was able to help(" ,)

I know, it's quite disturbing. Then when they give you a big sloppy kiss afterwards....oh gosh yuck. You can buy stuff that you sprinkle on your dogs food that will make his crap no longer yummy to him. You can find it in Petco, Petsmart, or other well-equipped pet stores. Good luck, I hope it works! :)

Yeah, they do that ... the only way to stop them is to pick it up real quick after it is deposited... makes it harder to let them lick you doesnt it...Another remedy I have heard is to leave it there and pour some tabasco sauce or powdered chilli on it - they will learn to stay away pretty quick...

It's because he is missing something in his diet. Switch to a better dog food brand.

This is common, no need to freak!

Ooooh, that's gross, I definitely wouldn't advertise that... jk

Yeah you have to put a stop to that, that's how they get worms and diseases.

Happens quite often actually, just make sure he doesn't lick your face after.
