am i looking for a father figure?

im 17 now, My mom divorced my Father when i was 8 years old, and now i Never talk to him or see my real dad anymore, but in 2001 my mom got married to my stepdad,(and i really dont like him) and hes been arrested for domestic violence against me before. but we have this family friend.(hes 43),and married and everything.(we consider him family) and i look up to him, so am i looking for a father figure in him?

If you don't have a positive role model in your life, you may be looking to your family friend to fill that void. But, if your family friend is honorable, respectful and a positive role model, there is nothing wrong with looking to him for advice, comfort and direction. Just be sure that you understand that the lack of a role model will affect your future relationship with men. You may find yourself staying in relationships, just because you want attention and love, which you didnt get from your father. BUT, you can grow to be a healthy, loving woman. Yes i think you are looking for a father figure and feeling rejected by your real father and that crappy step father i can see why. There is nothing wrong with looking for a supportive caring and nice male role model. If you think you have a crush on him it isnt real. Its that your emotional side is needing love and caring from a male role model. By the way, if your step father is abusive still to you i would look anywhere you can for a place to move to. What about this man and his family? Sounds alot healthier then what your living with now. Good luck!

Every person should know their parents. maybe you should give your father a shot before sweeping him aside for a family friend. call him and meet for coffee or whatever, if he refuses then the family friend is all you got the stepdad sounds like a loser anyway.

I would say yes. You've had a rough life, and never really was able to have a real father. Its natural to look for that in other places. I think its good you were able to find someone that you feel that close to.
