first off buy brushes thats made of fine hair not pig hair, becos it makes it easier to begin with,go buy yourself some acrylic paint to begin with then buy normal paper any size you like, draw your picture on it and begin to paint in layers(it's easier) ,as soon as you feel more comfortable with your brushes and paint switch to oil paint and canvas,it will give you more detail and texture, exper with the colours

Start by getting equipment and supplies. Buy paint brushes and paints that apeal to you. It does not matter which ones. What colors do you like? buy them. Be free, but know your financial limits, lol. I agree, Canvas is nice,...buy it only if you like it. Your a free bird.

If your good at drawing & sketching already,.....I am confident you will have the mindful insight to paint. Paint is just a faster.

You can sketch first if you want. You can sketch right on the white canvas. Its fun, exciting, fast, and radical!!!! go nuts!!! lol.

Good luck!! All it takes is equipment and supplies. Other than that...nothing stops you!!! go for it, you won't regret it.

You could do what i did when i decided to learn to paint. I didn't have the time or money for classes so i went to the library and checked out every book they had on my choice of mediums, oils. Then i went and bought some canvas boards (they're cheaper) and practiced. My work can be checked out at hellosanantonio.com under artist name ''Guerro''. I've never taken an art class, so if i can do it, you will too. My first paintings didn't look all that good but i kept going at it.

learning to paint has very little with what you paint, rather it being how you paint. landscape today , a still life tomorrow . a abstract or portrait next week. it matters little learn to paint anything and everything. That is a mark of a good artist. It is true most Artist start with Stills , but there is no set rule to that. Start with the basics of form(shape) value(color) and edges. In Landscapes that is a large curve to learn believe me. So large many Artist become stuck of sort in one of the many elements. Just as many become stuck in stills , landscapes etc. Just view it as learning to paint ANYTHING Good luck

Head on out to a store like Michael's or JoAnn's and they can get you started in a beginner's session of painting lessons. Then you will make minimal mistakes on supplies and be challenged to complete a lesson.

Enroll in an art class. The instructor will tell you what you have to purchase for the class.
