My dog has been licking his paws a lot lately and I'm afraid he'll get an infection. How can we get him to stop? My mom hits him or kicks him whenever he does but all that has taught him is to not do it only when she's not around. Any ideas?

Well, first of all stop hitting and kicking the dog. He wouldn't be licking them if they didn't itch. Foot licking is often a sign of allergies in dogs. Ask your vet to take a look. Tell your mom that if she were itchy and got smacked every time she scratched, it would be considered abuse!

Change the dogfood, it's likely a food allergy, probably the corn in the food..
Your mom is kinda stupid eh? Who would kick or hit a dog for licking his paws??

Change and feed a good food, get rid of that crap you feed.. Find a home for your mom, there is something definitely wrong with her.
Get the dog some more exercise so that while the new food is kicking in, he has something else to concentrate on, so that licking doesn't become a habit.
Lots of fresh clean water.. And see the vet, the dog might have some broken ribs..

STOP HITTING THE DOG!!!!! You have to figure out why he does it, maybe he is OCD (all dogs are at some point with something) and his behavior needs to be corrected. You could try buying BitterApple Spray sold in any pet store, just spray a pinch on his paw and he'll stop, they hate the smell. However, you may have to take him to the vet because there may be something wrong with the paws like infection, rash, fleas, or even glass, splinter etc stuck in there- Good Luck!!

Hitting him is not the answer.
The dog has probably forgot what he has done wrong by the time she kicks him.
Try putting a mild hot sauce, (just a drop so it wont burn his poor mouth) on whatever paw he is licking. Not alot, because that can seriously ingure your dog, or get into his eyes. Do one or two drops, that is enough. It wont burn your dogs mouth, it will give it a tingling feeling, that he will not like at all, making him not want to do that anymore. Also, dont put super spicy one on. Hope this helped!

Some dogs do this when they are nervous or stressed. See what triggers the licking. Also, you could get a chain to keep on the dog and yank it when he does it. Also, many trainers buy a handful of chain that are connected...when a dog does something bad you throw it on the ground (not at the dog) this associates an act with a bad noise. Hope this helps...

Hello? Why is your mom hitting and kicking the dog? Cats and dogs lick themselves all the time! It's nature, and she is going to punish the dog for it, she is just going to make the dog afraid of her and it is going to run away and hide from her after awhile, and quite frankly I wouldn't blame it. Poor thing. Wouldn't you hide too?

Your dog has an allergic skin problem. He needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. Shame on your mom for kicking the poor dog. I hope you don't treat him the same way.

This is normal dog behavior, not sure why you would want to stop it. Unless your dog is licking to the point where the fur is rubbed off and the skin is raw, don't worry about infection and let it clean itself. Punishing the dog for normal dog behavior is pretty dicey.

Here's an idea--keep your mom away from your dog. Hitting or kicking a dog for any reason is animal abuse.

OH MY GOD DO NOT HIT OR KICK YOUR DOG!!!
he may have a allergy... mine had similar behavior check between his "toes," if they look raw and infected he may have a skin infection, wipe his feet with a clean damp rag daily and take him to the vet, because the condtion is very uncomfatable for them!!!
