I have been diagnosed with mononucleosis, got the test done on the 21st, but have had swollen glands since about the 14th, how long does it take for the glands to go down, I am also pregnant and am not worried about if it will affect my baby, but it hurts so much I can barely swallow my own saliva. It is extremely painful, is there anything I can do to help the swelling go down, it hurts so much. I can't hardly eat, so I am worried that I will start losing weight and I am sure that would not be good for my baby. I can handle the fatigue and weakness, but I can't drink very much, and it is hard to sleep and my mouth gets dry very easily. I know it can last up to four months and I seriously don't think I can handle much more of the swollen gland.

You poor thing, I know how miserable you feel, but it must really be hard being pregnant too. I can tell you that the harsh misery like not being able to swallow, will go away in 1 to 2 weeks. But into the second week it will get easier and easier. My daughter has it right now too, my other daughter had it about 12 years ago and I had it in the late 1960's. It's true it takes a lonmg time before you are over it, but that is just the fatigue part. Plus you'll notice for 1 year or so, whenever you get ran down, you'll tend to have sore throats easier and your'll be extra tired. So, it's important to eat right and get plenty of rest as much as you can (not easy to do with a newborn, so you might need to ask for help when you feel really tired). For some reason our glands have never gone completely down, they always seem a little more prominent, and they'll flare up whenever you get ran down, and get the light symptoms again. I don';t want you tot think any of this is horrible, cause it's never, ever as bad as the first week is, but just want you to be aware of keeping your immune system as healthy as possible, so you don't have to go through the fatigue so much. Be patient, pamper yourself, you will feel better very soon, and I wish you the best with your new baby-that's certainly something to look forward to! Hope you feel better really soon! Take care!

Sounds like you might also have Strept throat which can go along with Mono and requires an antibiotic to get well. Your doctor could do a throat culture easily and quickly. Normally Mono alone probably wouldn't cause that much difficulty swallowing,

i had mono in october and had the same throat issue. sprays, Tylenol, none of that worked. the only things that helped me were antibiotics that were steroids and vicadin, that was the only way i could eat again. they tried to put my on a less harsh pain pill but i could still barley even swallow. i still have swollen glans on my neck and get mini-flare ups where i get extremely tired for a while and then it goes away. i have gotten at least 3 flare ups since october but i have been non-stop going, so it's important to take it easy for as long as you can.

Actually if you gargle with warm salt water that sometimes helps with the swelling and will not hurt your baby. Did you dr. prescribe you some kind of antibiotics? those should start to work in few days... also try some throat spray it tastes awful but it'll numb the back of your throat... or you could drink a warm beverage it may help. Good luck!
