My dog is very sweet and protective of me, and is fine with women but whenever a man comes over he wants to attack him. The shelter I adopted him from says he was abused by a man before he was resuced and has a big scar on his back, from the terriable abuse.. how can I change his behavior toward men?

Have the guys that come over to your house promise to toss treats (which you provide) towards the dog. Any coddling "It's okaaaayyyy...." from anyone should be avoided; in fact, the less said to the dog, the better. If this were my dog, this would be how he was fed all of his meals - by formerly scary strange men tossing him bits of food and ignoring him in every other way.
Remember that your dog's feelings are based on fear. Ask your male friends to keep a distance and to not reach out to the dog, or to stare at him (especially in the eyes). Just keep at this, have patience, and let your dog tell you when he's ready to move forward. If he's too stressed to take treats, back up a step so that he's comfortable.
Many dogs will relax more quickly when people get low. Turning to the side and kneeling may help your dog to understand that male visitors need not be attacked.
Good luck! I'm sure you'll do just fine.

Allowing him to act "protective" over you is not a good idea, and only reinforces aggressiveness. You should contact an experienced behavior trainer and they can give you lots of socialization ideas so no one gets hurt. It may take a long time to get him to trust men, but it can be done. In the meantime, make sure he is on a leash when men come over, and don't encourage any aggressive behavior.

my dog tends to not like men eithr. yu cant change it. jus make the men act kindly to your dog, and after a while, she'll gt used to the. also, its help if the male(s) give her a treat or a favorite toy! it works on my dog! hope it helps!

Take him to a dog trainer or obedience school to make your dog nicer to men.
