So I cooked too much bonless turkey breasts tonight for the family. Figured why not just make some meals for the dogs out of it. I have 2 shih tzu's, they eat Iams right now.

What are some recipes? Nothing too complicated, I heard cutting it up, mixing in some carrots, peas, oatmeal... and other stuff is good?

Should I also mix in some of their dry forumla. I'd love to start feeding them homemade meals. So any help is needed. Thanks!

Why would you feed your dog a filler? A filler is something that will make your dog feel full and produce more stool, but not give nutrition. Rice, oatmeal and potatoes have very little nutrition for your dog. If you are going to bother to make food, make it worthwhile and feed your dogs food that they will benefit from. There is no room for fruit, vegetables, or fillers in a dogs diet, they are unable to digest any of it.

I feed raw, and my girl gets tons of nutrients from what I give her, and she is able to digest it with no problem.

Every week I make a pot. I pick a meat, 2 or 3 vegetables, and a filler. Cook the meat in a big pot, then add lots of water and the vegetables and filler and cook some more. By the time it's done my dogs are whimpering with longing.

I usually vary it. Different types of meat each time, different vegetables, different filler. For filler, I use brown rice, long-cooking oatmeal, potatoes, etc. I buy big packages of frozen vegetables and vary that every week also (just no onions, they're poisonous).

Also I occasionally add eggs, almost always some crushed garlic (also helps with fleas), and when I serve it I sometimes add non-fat cottage cheese, non-fat plain yogurt, things like that.

Dogs also need bones not just muscle meat, so I save a steak bone or raw chicken leg for them at least once a week also.

It's really easy to cook for them! They're not very picky. :)
You can mix in some of their dry formula if you'd like, or to ease the transition. I don't. I am also going to start providing some vitamins in case I'm missing something in their diet.

They are loving their meals and losing weight at the same time.

Ask your vet for a balanced homemade recipe. It can be difficult to get a diet completely balanced with proteins, fats, carbs, vitamins and minerals. If the balance is off, the dog will suffer for it. Just feed a high quality dog food that takes all the guessing work out of your hands--much safer.

Well, a balanced meal is very important for dogs. To balance it all out you just need to crush eggshells into a fine dust a put it in their food. I haven't tried it, but that's what a veterinarian told me to do.
