well, it's almost summer, and I have to admit, I've packed on a few extra pounds. I'd like to lose about 5-10 lbs and get fit. but the diet can't be really restrictive, I'm only 14 and it's hard to find healthy choices, especially when I'm with my friends. I'm considering doing yoga, and don't mind walking and riding my bike to places. any suggestions to eat healthy and excercise??

Well, it sounds like you've already made the first step in finding an exercise that you enjoy doing. Yoga is a great way to burn calories and increase strength and muscle tone. Walking and biking are great aerobic exercises, and will definitely help you see some results.

Your diet really doesn't have to be too restrictive, just start paying attention to what and how much you're eating. If you're out with friends, try getting soup or salad instead of a huge plate of pasta. Use Splenda instead of sugar, drink water instead of soda, etc.

And, luckily there are plenty of very healthy vegetarian options at your local grocery store. Silk soy milk is very high in protein and low in calories (especially if you get light). Also, Glenda's Soy Crisps taste better than chips (in my humble opinion) and are only 70 calories a serving and have 10 grams of protein per bag. Boca burger makes an entire line of great tasting, low calorie vegetarian meals. I'm particularly fond of their chili.

Best of luck!

try veggies and commit to going to the gym. Even for 14 year olds its fun. I have tons of friends who love it. If you don't have enough time, just pick up a sport, maybe tennis or something. It could be fun. oh my gosh! i just read what you added. I got really excited because i'm 16 and i'm a vegetarian too! Wow, you just got so much cooler. Well then, it shouldn't be too hard. Its really easy for me to just eat whatever i can find, because its hard to find stuff, but just really commit to eating the healthy stuff. almost all cities have a place that serves healthy vegetarian food. Find it and enjoy! What i do when i want to exercise is just get into that state of mind that i WANT to be healthy and i WANT to be the one running on the side of the road. May sound dumb, but for me it works! Good Luck!!!

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

diet lipton green tea with citrus. it is really good (even if you dont like tea) and really good for you. theres a start. it helps if you make a list of just a few things you will try to avoid and then a list of a few healthy things that you can eat each day. not too strict but just a small way to begin. exercising is great. but so is little things like parking and the bottom of the parking lot walking farther or using stairs instead of elevator. things like that. good luck :)

try doing some cardio at least a few times a week, even if it's not that intense...yoga is good too

just try to make healthy choices when you eat--be sure to get a lot of protein and whole grains to sustain you...and don't forget fruits and veggies! oh and drink milk!
