I have a really hard time believing the dog though a CHILD was a chew toy. Dogs are incredible at reading humans. Better than any species studied- dolphins, chimps, whatever. A dog knows the difference between a human being and any other object- living or not. I agree that most pits don't kill that way, but we know nothing about this pit. Most dogs won't attack babies, either. Who knows what this dog was thinking, but in a legal sense, the dog was the proximate cause of the death. Lots of things can be said about the mother (and are being said), but the dog is the reason the child died. This is why the propaganda that "all dogs can be rehabilitated" and "there are no dangerous dogs, only negligent humans" are dangerous. Yes, the mother was negligent, but a dog fit for human society isn't going to kill an infant regardless of how negligent the owner. People can hardly be blamed for going to the shelter and adopting a pit mix of indeterminate origin and bringing it home to their household to live side by side with an infant. You see every show on animal planet praising the virtues of adopting, how pits just have a bad rap, how they can be a savior by rehabilitating the poor, sweet creatures. It's ridiculous. I don't have children, so I have feel comfortable taking a gamble with shelter dogs. When I have children, my dogs will be old and trained, and any new dogs will come from a breeder who I trust and respect.

The Best thing To Do Is Talk To A Vet. I Do Believe It Could Result In Mentally Retarded Dogs...You May Need To Dispose Of Them...For The Good Of The Public..But Ask A Vet.

How could you let this happen? Pits are always in the news for one thing or another often times it's not even a pit. As a pit bull owner( of a thrown away puppy at the shelter) this outrageous me. You should have her fixed(BOTH OF THEM).
So call your vet and make an appt. Before their are more pups on DEATH ROW!

And if you need to see a picture go to you local shelter ....

As a responsible pit bull owner, I am constantly upset by the lack of knowledge of many who own this wonderful breed. These animals should have been spayed & neutered long before this. Now you still can, but it costs more once they are pregnant. Inbred puppies have a higher tendency toward deformity, health problems, allergies, albinism, and especially unfortunate, aggression and lowered mental capacity. Do the right thing and spay and neuter your pets NOW. This is precisely the sort of thing that sets up the circumstances that are leading a big political charge to outlaw this breed. When this happens in your area, your pets will be euthanised.
Most importantly, educate yourself about this breed, Not through word of mouth or message boards, but through reliable sources such as the American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA) and the United Kennel Club (UKC).

The danger in breeding littermates and dogs who are closely related is the very real possibility of genetic defects resulting in possible deformities and/ or other health problems. Aside from this, Pit Bull females tend to have very large litters. I have a rescue pup I raised on a bottle from a litter of fourteen. The sad reality is, you would have a large number of puppies to place and it will be harder since they are puppies that are inbred. If your female was just bred, within the past week or so, it is not too late to take her to the Vet and get her spayed. Just tell the Vet she bred with her littermate and when.

This is the kind of BS that gets Pitbulls in the news. Doing an inbreeding with dogs you likely have no clue about your own pedigrees is a very dangerous thing. Go get her spayed and terminate the pregnancy.
I hope all you whiners about the bad reputation your breed has see's that this is why. This kind of crap happens daily.
This guy has no clue how genetics work. He is acting like someone is going to show him dogs that look like freaks or something. To bad we can't send him pictures of the genes he just doubled up on. Probably would scare the hel out of him. ARG.. Spay your female now.

That depends on teh breeding of the parents and going back generations. their can be hereditay problem, health problem and a number of other problems but in most cases nothing. I would have the male fixed before any more accidents happen and get her spayed when the puppies are 8-9 weeks old.

Things like this don;t happen by accident. It happens because of neglect on the part of the owner. I have a brother and sister too, but they were neutered/spayed before the girl was even close to her first heat at 5 months.

The pups may well be badly deformed. Even if it's not visible there are almost always genetic problems. Get the female spayed right away to abort the pups and get the male neutered at the same time.

The pups would have the same sort of problems as if you had your brothers baby. You must get them aborted NOW!

Brothers and sisters will breed. You might be lucky and have the pregnancy go smoothly and the puppies born without any problems. However, if there are any genetic faults in the lineage then breeding siblings will increase the changes of the faults being expressed in the resulting puppies.

If your dogs are not show dogs, then I would recommend that you terminate the pregnancy and get both dogs desexed. There are far too many puppies in the world that get killed in pounds every day for you to add to the problem.
