I live in northern Nevada about 100 ft from Union Pacific's main westbound tracks between Chicago and the west coast so, as you can imagine, I've seen a LOT of trains go by. The longest I can remember was a combination coal and frieght train that went lumbering through town about a year ago. I counted 235 cars but may have missed one or two.

Another reason is what is called the "Mixed" train -- like the Polar Bear Express run by Ontario Northland RR. The passenger cars are for hunters, fisherman, campers, etc., as well as people who live along the line. The freight cars act as a rolling store, bringing needed items to the hinterlands.

A +500 axle stack train.

Tripped the New London, Ohio detector. By the time I got up and got to the crossing, it was coming down the rails towards Greenwich. It rolled by for awhile.

I've seen coal and empty coal trains with 150+ cars. Also some manifests and intermodals 10,000 ft+ long. That's about 2 miles..and I see that often.

Doubled two trains together at a place called Black Butte once. I don't remember how many cars, but just over 10,000 feet, with the power. We had to leave six cars behind, though.

Got a knuckle too. But that wasn't my fault. The conductor put 72 cars into a 66 car track. They don't roll so good buried in the dirt...................
