Does one HAVE to install GM Factory Integration Adapter when installing an aftermarket stere on a 2003 Monte Carlo. I was informed of this when trying to install a new stereo, and was informed that if it is not installed with the new stereo some features such as alerts will not work anymore. This adapter is expensive around $100 and I was just wondering if the adapter has to be installed or if there are any alternatives or if just not installing one would affect the car negatively?

I have installed several new head units in both the '01-05 Monte Carlo and '01-'05 Impala, using a standard wire harness (Metra 70-2003) instead of the data-bus module.

If you do it this way you will lose all audible warning chimes, as they're generated by the factory radio. You will also lose the "retained accessory power" feature for the radio, which is what keeps the power on after you turn off the key until you open a door. There's no accessory power wire in the factory radio plug, so you'll have to connect the new deck's red wire to another source of key-switched power; I usually like to use the brown wire at the key switch itself.

Other than the warning chimes, you shouldn't have any problems. Your air bags, keyless entry system, factory alarm, locks, and so on won't be affected by removal of the factory radio.

most of the new model cars do have to have the kits that cost extra so that the lightrs and alarms work properly. some of the cars ill not even start without the proper wires hooked up.
