My basset hound's eyes are red and her nose is dry and warm even though she's been awake quite a while. She's acting normal but I'm concerned. I know bassets get a lot of ear infections - could this be a sign of infection, or any other sickness? Or am I worried over nothing? Please help! Thanks!

I just looked in her ears and one of them is clean, but the other looks like it has some dirt in it, or dirty wax, something like that. Does that mean anything? I'm taking her to the groomers tomorrow to have her ears cleaned and nails clipped - will that take care of it?

Thanks!

Your basset could have a yeast infection in one ear, this is comman in hounds because of the very floppy ears. They can't get air to dry out like other breeds. You should take it to the vet to be sure. My groomer did not recognize it in my basset, she thought they were just very dirty. When he started to dig at them I took him to the vet and they treated him for yeast.

It's good that you are having the dog's ears cleaned. There are products made for dogs whose ears a long and droopy, that will keep the ear clean and dry. They aren't expensive and you should be able to pick that up at the groomers or your vet's office.

Dogs' eyes become red for the same reason people's do...usually from allergies, especially in the spring. Your vet will give you some eyedrops that will alleviate the irritation, while making sure there is not infection there. If the eyes are mattering (white gunky stuff around the eye), there may be an infection there and the vet will give you some ointment to clear that up.

I think your dog is probably fine. The only way to tell a dogs temp is to get the thermometer and take it rectally. The normal temp is 100-102.5 degrees F. Look in the ears and see if there is any debree of any kind. If so take her in and have an ear swab done to determine if it is infact an ear infection. But if she's acting normal and isn't shaking her head like her ears are bothering her she's probably just fine. When dogs are sick they sleep alot so her being awake for a while is a good sign. And her eyes are probably red because she's tired but dogs can have a redened white of the eye without it being a problem.Good Luck

I'd suggest keeping a close eye on her, just to be sure that her behavior doesn't change or anything like that. Maybe even calling your vet now and telling them of the situation may help.

However, if you notice the symptoms are starting to get worse, maybe contacting your vet to make an appointment would be good.

I would definitely get her checked out by a vet. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
