What's the differents between a CFI and a CFII ?

CFII is the certification to teach instrument flying for an instrument rating, and, of course, the instructor must already be a CFI.

CFI = Usually what an instructor with only and airplane single-engine rating will call him/herself.

CFII = Usually what an instructor with an instrument instructor rating will call him/herself.

Both of these are just common shortcuts though. Really it works like this:

A Certificated Flight Instructor can give instruction only in the aircraft/conditions for which he/she is rated. So, if you have a CFI license with an airplane, singe-engine rating, you can instruct people how to fly single engine airplanes. The more appropriate abbreviation would be CFI-ASE. Then, you can add an instrument airplane rating to that, and now you would be a CFI with both an airplane single-engine rating and an instrument airplane rating. I guess you would abbreviate this as CFI-ASE,IA. To take it one step further, you could then get an airplane multi-engine rating as well. Then you would be a CFI-ASE,AME,IA. The list goes on as to what ratings you can add.... helicopter, glider, etc.

So, you can see why most people keep it simple and say that they are either a CFI, a CFII, or an MEI.
