My friend (a girl, 17), is going to join the army in one year (she wants to be a medic). She wants to know if the stories about sexual tension or abuse are strong, because she is worried about rape, sexual abuse, etc.

My daughter, age 19, is currently on active duty, we are quite close and she has never mentioned any such problems to me. I spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy, and while it unquestionably happens, my experience is that it is the exception rather than the rule.

About 20 percent of women in the military are sexually abused.

They watch really close for any sexual abuse.
The women in my son's unit have never complained &
he has a talk with anyone he even thinks is looking
wrong at the female soldiers. There have not been any rapes in the news for tears either.

Such behavior is illegal and all the services are very serious about preventing it and punishing violators, but yet it still happens with disturbing frequency.
